About the University

Founded in 1662, the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg is the oldest art academy in the German-speaking world. With approximately 300 students, the Academy provides an intimate and creative learning environment, focusing on both the fine and applied arts.

Located in Nuremberg, Bavaria, the Academy is housed in a building designed by renowned architects Sep Ruf and Hascher Jehle. The facilities provide students with ample space and resources to explore different artistic disciplines and engage in interdisciplinary collaborations.

The Academy offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including Fine Art, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Graphic Design/Visual Communication and Secondary Art Education. The Performative Practices Masters is a unique addition to the curriculum and reflects the Academy's commitment to contemporary art forms.

One of the strengths of the Academy is its emphasis on individual artistic development and self-directed learning. Students work closely with professors in small classes that encourage free discourse and the exchange of ideas. The aim is to enable students to acquire individual competence and scalable skills in both theory and practice.

The Academy is an active participant in the Erasmus+ programme, facilitating international exchanges and collaborations with partner institutions. This global perspective enriches the learning experience and prepares students for careers in an increasingly interconnected art world.

Notable alumni of the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg include Günther Uecker, a prominent figure in the ZERO movement, and Ottmar Hörl, known for his conceptual art installations.

With its rich history, diverse study programmes and commitment to fostering individual artistic growth, the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg continues to be a leading institution for aspiring artists, designers and art educators in Germany and beyond.
