Course Description
At the University of Tübingen, Scandinavian Studies is offered as a bachelor's minor with a focus on Medieval Studies.
In terms of its staffing, Scandinavian Studies is one of the smaller subjects at the University of Tübingen. The manageable conditions enable students to make personal contact with the teachers quickly and easily and allow for very intensive support. In addition, the courses are characterized by their closeness to research from an early stage, both in terms of concrete content and questions as well as discussions, which means that a critical scientific approach to primary and secondary sources is imparted even in the early stages of study.
The Department of Scandinavian Studies has a permanent Norwegian and Swedish lecturer. Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish are taught as weekly four-hour intensive language courses that combine grammatical, semantic, regional, and practical language components; reading current newspapers and modern Scandinavian literature also plays a major role in the advanced language courses.
Language practice and intercultural competence can also be acquired through foreign exchange: a wide range of cooperations with Scandinavian universities allow for an ERASMUS stay of up to two semesters at universities in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland.
The research focuses on Icelandic medieval literature, which is examined primarily from narratological and cultural studies perspectives. There is close cooperation with German medieval studies, medieval archaeology, English studies, and religious studies.
