Course Description

Students in this master's program acquire a broad range of key academic and cultural skills. Graduates from the program are in an excellent position to engage in and contribute to national and international academic discourse.

Description

Students can choose to study one of the subject areas 'British Literary and Cultural Studies', 'English Linguistics' or 'North American Literary and Cultural Studies' for their single-subject master's degree or as their main (major) subject if they are enrolled for a dual-subject degree program. Further specialization within any of the main three subject areas is expressly encouraged. The program offers students a wide variety of options for planning study abroad periods that are tailored to their individual preferences or career goals and the department assists students in establishing contacts with foreign universities and research groups.

Students not only gain a detailed understanding of their chosen specialist discipline based on current research activity in the field, but they also acquire the skills needed to be able to produce sound and reasoned analyses of the linguistic, literary, and cultural relationships of a topic through the application of the relevant theoretical and methodological tools. They also acquire a high level of proficiency in analyzing and interpreting a diverse range of text types drawn from English-speaking cultures, including film and digital texts.

Previous Degree

Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with a focus on linguistics, English studies, American studies, modern English literature and cultures/postcolonial studies, or another relevant subject. If the equivalence of the submitted university degree cannot be determined, provisional admission is possible subject to conditions.

Further admission requirements are:

For the core area and the main subject:
1. Proof of specialist skills in the above-mentioned areas in the scope of at least 80 CP.
2. A final grade of at least 2.0 for the required undergraduate course. If the final grade is not given, the suitability - taking into account the existing grade - can be determined based on an English-language application letter and/or interview.
For the minor:
1. Proof of specialist skills in the above-mentioned areas in the scope of at least 60 CР.

GPA Comment

Your point average must be at least 2.0 (converted to the German scale of 1-6 with 1.0 at best). If this is not the case, applicants may still be able to demonstrate their aptitude for the Master's degree program based on a letter of application in English and/or an admissions interview in combination with the grade achieved in their first degreе.

Additional information:

You must submit an internationally recognized certificate of English (e.g., IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, etc.) attesting C1 level (in the European framework) for all skills individually. This holds even if your bachelor’s degree was taught entirely in English or your school issued a statement. It is sufficient to submit a copy of the transcript. Applicants are not required to demonstrate German language proficiency. If your native language is English or if you have previously demonstrated C1 language proficiency in all areas, no additional language qualification will need to be submitted. If your final grade does not meet the requirement stated above, you may still be able to demonstrate your aptitude for the master’s degree program based on a letter of application in English and/or an admissions interview that will be considered in combination with the grade achieved in their first degree.
