Qualification Requirements
Bachelor's degree in either Geophysics, Climate Physics, Meteorology, Oceanography, or a related subject.
Minimum standard period of study: 3 years.
Required ECTS credits: 180.
For the Master's degree program in "Climate Physics: Meteorology and Physical Oceanography”, the following applies:
- applicants with a university degree in a related subject can be admitted without satisfying further conditions if they have obtained at least a total of 50 ECTS credit points in modules from the subjects of Physics and Mathematics. The content of these modules must correspond with the knowledge upon achievement of the bachelor’s degree program in “Physics of the Earth System: Meteorology - Oceanography– Geophysics”. If the applicant has obtained fewer than 50 ECTS credit points but at least 40 ECTS credit points in modules from the subjects of Physics and Mathematics, then admission is possible under the condition that the student catches up with the required ECTS credit points as part of the optional studies.
- In addition, admission to the Master’s degree program in “Climate Physics: Meteorology and Physical Oceanography”, requires evidence of the following:
- A special motivation, evidenced by a motivational letter written in English which presents:
- The specific talents and interests on account of which the applicant considers him or herself particularly suited to this degree program.
- To what extent he or she possesses sufficient prior knowledge of the scientific basics of the Master's degree, obtained from a first-degree program and/or previous professional activities.
- How this master’s degree program will enable the applicant to achieve his/her professional goals.
- Programming skills in at least one programming language, as well as knowledge of Unix or Linux.
- A special motivation, evidenced by a motivational letter written in English which presents:

Application Documents
Documents to be provided are as follows:
- Letter of motivation (in English language, length 1 page), detailing in what way the applicant is especially suited for this study program, and to what extent the applicant has previous knowledge from undergraduate studies or from employment concerning the scientific basics of the master's program. The letter should also show how the applicant intends to use the knowledge acquired in this master's program in his or her future career.
- Statement of programming skills in at least one programming language (Matlab, Python, etc.), and knowledge of Unix or Linux. A declaration is sufficient, but you can also upload any certificates to this effect if you have them.
- Proof of proficiency in English (see language requirements, mandatory for non-native speakers).
Please note:
Applicants for the course will have to apply via an online application portal. You will also have to submit
- a table with ECTS points of courses you have had in Physics and applied or pure Mathematics.
- Certificates of academic diplomas (Bachelor, etc.).
- Official academic transcripts from all universities attended.
- APS certificate (only applicants from China and Vietnam).
