Special Program Features
Interdisciplinary program
With a focus on terrestrial ecosystems, the curriculum includes perspectives from various related disciplines such as earth science, soil science, meteorology, biology, and hydrology. It also teaches the knowledge of political and socio-economic issues, and management skills.
Pursue your own research interests
The MSc offers many elective courses and provides students with the option to pursue independent research by writing a paper on a topic of their choice. This format is called ‘Current Issue’.
Field trips in Freiburg’s diverse landscape
The mountains of the Black Forest and the vegetation in the Rhine valley provide excellent opportunities for field trips and are a magnet for environmental scientists and organizations.

Requirements
Qualification Requirements
The application requirements for the Study program in “Environmental Sciences” are:
Previous degree in
- Environmental Sciences
- Forestry
Degrees are accepted if they fulfill the course requirements: 50 ECTS from natural sciences and forestry sciences, social and economic sciences and quantitative methods + additional requirements for the respective elective tracks*.
Minimum ECTS required:
- 180 (3-year BA)
ECTS are credit points acquired under the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. One ECTS credit point comprises an estimated 25 to 30 hours of work.
If not available yet, please provide a copy of your latest transcripts of records proving you have gained at least 150 ECTS already and notification on when you will hand in your bachelor’s thesis.
The required minimum GPA is 2.9 in the German system.
