Course Description


The M.Sc in Environmental Sciences at the University of Freiburg offers application-oriented and research-driven training. Students become experts in understanding the impact of humans on ecosystems and the environment. The mandatory core modules teach students research skills, processes and functioning of ecosystems, environmental policies, and economics. Practical relevance is maintained through a 7-week internship.

The majors Climate Change EcologyWildlife and BiodiversityEnvironmental Modelling and Data Sciences, and Sustainability Assessment and Transformation are taught in English.

Previous Degree

Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences or forestry or related.

For the Climate Change Ecology major, applicants must have at least:

  1. 70 ECTS in natural sciences and ecology.
    1. 25 ECTS in ecology.
  2. 10 ECTS in Statistics and Geomatics.

For the Wildlife and Biodiversity major, applicants must have at least:

  1. 55 ECTS in natural sciences and ecology.
    1. Proof of floristic and faunistic species knowledge.
    2. Population ecology.
  2. 15 ECTS in statistics and geomatics.

For the Environmental Modelling and Data Sciences major, applicants must have at least:

  1. 50 ECTS in natural sciences and ecology.
  2. 20 ECTS in statistics and geomatics.
  3. Knowledge of a higher programming language.

For the Sustainability Assessment and Transformation major, applicants must have at least:

  1. 40 ECTS in natural sciences and ecology.
  2. 10 ECTS in statistics and geomatics.
  3. 20 ECTS in environmental social sciencеs.
