Discover Geophysics in Kiel – From Outer Space to the Depths of the Ocean [Video in German]
Course Description
The M.Sc. Geophysics at Kiel University provides students with advanced knowledge of modern geophysical research and technology. The program focuses on solid Earth geophysics and covers areas such as marine and applied geophysics, seismology, and satellite or airborne geophysics. Students benefit from close collaboration with GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel, gaining access to cutting-edge facilities and experts. The program combines rigorous scientific training with project-based learning, preparing graduates for diverse international research and professional careers.

The program is designed for graduates with a strong background in geophysics, physics, mathematics, or related disciplines who are eager to pursue advanced research or applied careers. It particularly appeals to internationally minded students who enjoy fieldwork, data analysis, and exploring the Earth’s physical processes using cutting-edge technology.
Special Program Features
Working Group Applied Geophysics
The group focuses on archaeogeophysical, hydro- and environmental geophysical research. We adapt, advance, and apply a broad range of near-surface methods—from geoelectrical imaging and georadar to magnetics and active/passive seismic techniques—on land and on water.
Working Group Marine Geophysics and Hydroacoustics
Equipped with a range of hydroacoustic and seismic systems operated on both large research vessels and smaller boats, the group investigates key marine and lacustrine processes — including marine hazards, sediment transport, the distribution of habitats, morphological changes, and lake evolution.
Working Group Satellite and Aerogeophysics
Exploring Earth with satellite or airborne observations, often with a focus on Polar regions and the rocky parts beneath the ice, is a main topic for the group. For this, advanced modeling and inversion techniques are developed to translate the geophysical measurements into 3-D images of the Earth.
Working Group Seismology
Studying drivers of plate deformation and geohazards (earthquakes and volcanic eruptions) using seismic tomography, participating in large-scale passive seismic experiments like AdriaArray, monitoring seismicity, analyzing ambient seismic noise in marine environments.
GEOMAR
GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a leading marine research institute in Germany. Its geophysics department is called Marine Geodynamics. We study seafloor structures, plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanism using a wide range of geophysical methods to understand Earth’s crustal evolution, marine geohazards, and natural resources. → More Info
Accreditations

System Accreditation
System Accreditation
System accreditation is the internal quality assurance system of a state or state-recognized higher education institution in Germany. With system accreditation, a higher education institution receives the right to award the seal of the Accreditation Council for its self-assessed study programs.
Requirements
Qualification Requirements
The application requirements for the study program in "Geophуsiсs" are:
in Geophysics or a related subject lasting for at least 6 terms and with a total of 180 ECTS
Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in a related field can be admitted if they provide at least 50 ECTS in Physics, Geophysics, and Mathematics, along with knowledge of Geology. If fewer than 50 but at least 40 ECTS are demonstrated in these subjects, admission is possible on the condition that an additional 30 ECTS be completed in them. Depending on the applicant’s language skills, these courses are assigned to either the Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Kiel, with up to 10 of the additional ECTS credits applicable toward the Master’s degree in Geophysiсs.
Normal physical fitness is required for participation in field exercisеs.
at least B2 (CΕFR)
Applies only to applicants holding degrees from outside the European Higher Education Program (EHEA)
minimum score of 145 points for verbal reasoning, 160 points for quantitative reasoning and a 3.0 for analytiсal writing
Applies only to applicants holding degrees from outside the European Higher Education Program (EHEA)
The applicant must demonstrate in an online test (via Zoom) that their academic qualifications make them suitable for admission to the prοgram.
