Why you should study Human Geography (M.A.) in Mainz!
Course Description
The M.A. Human Geography: Globalization, Media and Culture offers a critical, interdisciplinary exploration of the entanglements between globalization, space, digital media and culture. Students examine contemporary debates around ethics, place making, environmental justice, and the transformative power of media in shaping perceptions of identities, spaces and cultures. Combining rigorous theoretical inquiry with empirical research practice, the program empowers students to understand—and intervene in—today’s global challenges through the lens of human geography.
This program is ideal for graduates of human geography or related fields in social sciences, humanities, and cultural studies who wish to engage critically with globalization and media from a geographic perspective. Students should bring a strong interest in theory-driven, empirically grounded research and the motivation to explore the world through spatial, cultural and media lenses.
Special Program Features
Practice-Based Methodology: From Ethnography to Audiovisual Media
The program emphasizes qualitative research methods—including ethnography and audiovisual techniques like podcasting or short films—equipping students with creative and analytical tools to explore space, identity, and media in nuanced ways.
Hands-On Research Workshops: Design and Conduct Your Own Study
In semesters 2 and 3, students participate in structured Research Workshops where they conceptualize, plan, and carry out their own empirical research project—often including fieldwork. This supports academic independence and methodological depth.
Strong Networks for Research and Career Success
Students benefit from a dynamic learning environment supported by expert faculty and a strong support infrastructure—including the Career Service, the Startup Center, and the Gutenberg Council for Young Researchers—that fosters both academic and professional development. → More Info
