Application Procedure & Selection
Application Documents
All applicants applying with a degree from a university outside of Germany, regardless of citizenship, need to have their documents checked by uni-assist e. V. (University Application Service for International Students).
In a preliminary review documentation (VPD) procedure, uni-assist evaluates your educational certificates. They create a VPD including information about how your educational certificates have been evaluated and how they rate your grade (GPA) in the German grading system.
It takes at least four to six weeks to process your documents. Please plan accordingly to have your transcripts reviewed by uni-assist. We recommend sending the documents to uni-assist at the latest by the 15th of February.
During the application period, you must complete the application procedure through the online application portal:
Applications have to be submitted online during the application period (February 15 until March 31). To apply for the program, please follow the instructions in the STiNE online application form provided by the admissions office of Universität Hamburg.
All application documents have to be uploaded in the last section of the online application form.
Applicants do not have to send any hard copies of documents (diplomas, degree certificates, transcripts, etc.) to Universität Hamburg for the application.
Any information or documents submitted after March 31 cannot be considered.
Scan of the first degree certificate (if not yet available, a current transcript of records suffices).
Official overview of grades including grade point average.
In business administration: e.g. a transcript proving at least 12 ECTS in business administration.
Please hand in a written justification of your choice of degree. This will be part of the selection process. We expect you to justify your choice of program on the basis of the points listed:
- What is your personal motivation for applying for the "Master of Arts in International Business and Sustainability" (MIBAS) at Universität Hamburg?
- Which experiences – as part of your first degree and your job experience – contribute to your qualifications for the MIBAS program?
- Which program components have triggered your specific interest in MIBAS, which aspects of the program are most appealing to you
- Reflecting on the MIBAS program, to what extent and why do you think that firms have a responsibility to society and not to their shareholders only? Which aspects are of particular relevance and why?
Please use the designated template (PDF) for your answers. Please save the PDF file to your PC before filling it.
Your answers (in English) should not exceed three pages. Please comment on all mentioned points to allow us to form a detailed impression of you.

Testimonials
I wrote in my application that consumerism is out of fashion, and I chose MIBAS because sustainability is a solid, inevitable future. It motivates me to grow not only professionally and academically but also personally. I get to proactively comprehend a lot of complex interdisciplinary topics, such as philosophical, economic, psychological, and societal issues, and I apply what I learn to my studies, work, and daily life. I find it interesting we as people with a passion for sustainability, share a similar temperament with high openness and tolerance, even though we are all from distinctively different backgrounds. I love that my MIBAS colleagues are intelligent, explorative, and accepting. I cannot wait to see where we’ll all be after the study, changing the world in different parts and positions.
As an Industrial Engineer, I graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree and worked in the Procurement Department of a multinational corporation. During this time, I was always concerned about how companies could be profitable and at the same time socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable. After long research, I found the MIBAS program at Hamburg University and considered this to be the best opportunity to supplement my studies and to submerge in the Sustainability world. Since the first semester, the MIBAS program aligned Business and Sustainability in a well-structured curriculum. Besides the academic orientation, the program provides a multicultural experience and an international emphasis where you have the chance to study and share with students across all nationalities, while immersing yourself in the German culture in the fabulous city of Hamburg.
Moin! My name is Gulkhanim and I am from the land of fire – Azerbaijan. I have always dreamed of studying at a reputed university, with a stimulating environment that could also embody everything I value: highly qualified professors, captivating various courses, inspiring atmosphere, and enthusiastic international students from all over the world. Hamburg University is one of the best universities with notable reputation and history. I felt proud to be awarded the opportunity to attend such a strong and knowledgeable institution with a strong international related program as MIBAS. What do I like about MIBAS? Well, I genuinely enjoy this unique program; it fits perfectly with my career aims and ambitions! Moreover, this program drives you to be environmentally friendly, appreciate our planet, as it gives us a Home and there is no better place than Home!
