From Curiosity to Discovery: Physics at KIT
Course Description
Shape your future in physics at one of Germany’s leading science-and-technology institutions. KIT’s M.Sc. Physics lets you build an individual academic profile through wide-ranging electives in experimental and theoretical physics, research-oriented teaching and close contact with both university research and large-scale research facilities. From nanophysics and optics to particle physics, astroparticle physics, cosmology, and condensed matter theory, you tailor your studies to your interests while strengthening your analytical depth in advanced lab work, interdisciplinary coursework, and an independent master’s thesis designed to prepare you for doctoral study or innovation focused careers.

This program is designed for graduates with a bachelor’s degree in physics or a closely related field with strong foundations in theoretical physics, experimental physics, and lab work. It suits students who want to deepen their expertise, explore specialized topics across modern physics, and prepare for research-intensive careers in academia, R&D, data-driven roles, or doctoral study.
Special Program Features
Small Cohorts, Big Academic Support
With a ~1:10 student-to-teacher ratio and cohorts of up to 25 students, you benefit from direct access to professors—often just next door—for guidance and discussion.
Advanced Lab to Thesis
An Advanced Physics Laboratory Course, Scientific Methods module, specialization phase, and six-month thesis create a clear path toward independent research and scientific work.
Learn Directly from Leading Researchers
Courses are taught directly by professors who are actively involved in research, ensuring that you engage with current scientific questions and insights rather than assistant-led instruction.
Research Meets Big Science
Teaching is closely connected to university research and large-scale research environments, giving your coursework a strong research orientation from the very beginning onward.

Accreditations

System Accreditation
System Accreditation
System accreditation is the internal quality assurance system of a state or state-recognized higher education institution in Germany. With system accreditation, a higher education institution receives the right to award the seal of the Accreditation Council for its self-assessed study programs.
Requirements
Qualification Requirements
The application requirements for the study program in "Phуsiсs" are:
with at least 180 ECTS or a minimum study duration of three years in Physics or a closely related field.
Required academic background:
- Theoretical Physics: at least 32 ECTS
- Experimental Physics: at least 32 ECTS
- Physics lab courses (or equivalent): at least 18 ECTS
If up to 10 ECTS in the required subject areas are missing, admission may still be granted conditionally, requiring the missing credits to be completed by the end of the 2nd semester. The admissions commission decides whether this condition applies.
Applicants who fall short of the full requirements but can demonstrate at least 30 ECTS in Theoretical Physics, 30 ECTS in Experimental Physics, and 15 ECTS in Physics lab courses may be invited to an admission interview to demonstrate their subject knowledgе.
at least B2 (CΕFR)
Language Requirements
The following certificates are recognized as proof of your language proficiency.
Specification: no section below 5.5
