Previous Degree

Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) preferably in political science or in a related subject.

Minimum standard period of study: 6 semesters.

In order to be admitted directly to the master program and not to take the aptitude test, applicants need to fulfill the following requirements, besides the mentioned GPA:

  1. A minimum of 90 ECTS points in political science, and particularly in the modules of the three political science subdivisions of political theory, political systems, and international relations,
  2. The record of examinations taken during the first degree course in the area of the methodologies of empirical political research must total at least 9 ECTS points (as part of the minimum of 90 ECTS points in political sciencе).

Special Deadline Case:
Summer semester: The deadline indicated is for the Double Master Degree Option Barcelona (UPF). The deadline for applying at LMU is May 15th. Foreign applicants, who have neither a German higher education entrance qualification, nor a first university degree taken in Germany, are required to submit an additional application to the International Office at LMU. The binding registration deadline is July 15th.

In order to participate in the double degree program, applicants have to satisfy the academic and admission requirements of both institutions. All students have to apply at both UPF and LMU.

For applying at LMU:

You will need to attach the following documents to your online application:

  1. curriculum vita in tabular form.
  2. A copy of the leaving certificate from your first academic degree course with the details of all your examination results ("transcript of records") and the official grade point average, if available. In the event that you do not yet have the first-degree leaving certificate at the time of your application, please include a "transcript of records" with the seal and signature of the responsible examination office and with the grade record of five semesters of study in your major subject.
  3. Proof of English language skills with an uncertified copy (see language requirements).
  4. It is recommended to hand in a letter of motivation in English stating the candidate's interest in following the double master degree option (400 to 600 words).

For applying at UPF:

Compulsory documentation:

  1. Official university degree  or master's degree from the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) or equivalent foreign degree that allows access to a postgraduate degree in the country that issued the degree. If the applicant has not yet completed his/her studies at the time of application, he/she will be asked to sign a declaration accrediting that he/she will have completed the program before the start of the master's degree.
  2. Academic transcript of official training accredited with the average grade of the home university.
  3. Curriculum vitae written in English.
  4. Photocopy of English level (see language requirements). If you are unable to prove your English proficiency with an official certificate due to the covid-19 emergency, you can take an online English proficiency test through the UPF Language Service.
    If you want to apply for the language accreditation exemption for being a native student or having studied in the language in question, you need to attach a brief letter explaining the reasons.
    1. Letter of motivation in English, stating the interest in taking the master's degree, with an length of between 400 and 600 words.
    2. Two letters of recommendation (in free format and with the original letterhead of the issuing institution). For better management and security of the required letters of recommendation, the student must request them through the online application, which must indicate the e-mail address of the person/persons that you want to be recommended. This person will receive an email stating that the student has requested to be endorsed. Non-institutional addresses such as yahoo, gmail, hotmail, etc. will not be accepted.
  5. National identity document or passport.

Optional documentation:

Although it is not compulsory, the department organizing the master's degree may assess the following points as merits, for admission purposes (a photocopy of the corresponding accreditations/documents must be attached):

  • Work experience in a sector related to the subject area of ​​the master's degree.
  • Research experience.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Complementary academic training in the areas related to the master's degree.
  • Complementary vocational training.

In addition, within this section, the selection committee may arrange an interview with the candidate.

For applying at the International Office at LMU:

International applicants (without German nationality) who wish to study at LMU will generally need to submit their application to the International Office.

  1. University admission qualification (generally Abitur certificate or equivalent school leaving certificate; where applicable: school leaving certificate in combination with a university entrance examination certificate or a certificate from a one-year higher education course or university certificate). You can refer to the website Anabin or the DAAD database to find out whether your school leaving certificate qualifies you to embark on a degree program at a German university.
    1. In the original language — as an officially certified copy.
    2. With an officially certified translation. Certificates in English, French, Italian, Catalan, Latin, Portuguese, Rumanian and Spanish do not have to be translated.
    3. recognition notification from the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle für den Freistaat Bayern (ZASt) is required for holders of the International Baccalaureate who have not yet received their final certificate, for applicants from the USA (unless they already hold a bachelor's degree) and for applicants from Afghanistan.
    4. Applicants from the PR China and Vietnam should submit the original certificate from the Akademische Prüfstelle bei der Deutschen Botschaft. The International Admissions office also reserves the right to require a recognition notification from ZASt in other individual cases.
  2. Updated resume.

In addition – if you have studied at university before:

  1. All university certificates and diplomas and all transcripts of records:
    1. In the original language - as an officially certified copy. Applicants from the USA require transcripts in a sealed university envelope.
    2. With an officially certified translation. Certificates in English, French, Italian, Catalan, Latin, Portuguese, Rumanian and Spanish do not have to be translated.
  2. Where applicable, registration and confirmation of programs confirmation of programs previously studied at any other German university.
  3. If you are applying for a master’s degree program: Letter of admission for the master’s degree program from the coordinator of the degree program (can be handed in later during registration).

In addition – if you are married or have changed your name:

  • Marriage certificate or
  • official notice of change of name.
