Qualification Requirements


Previous Degree

Bachelor's degree in natural science, mathematics, computer science, or engineering.

Knowledge of 120 CP must be demonstrated in the subject areas of mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, and computer science. These 120 CP must include the knowledge listed in the following table to the minimum extent specified:

  1. Mathematics.
    1. Core areas: 10 CP (both points must be covered).
      1. Linear algebra (vector and tensor calculation, matrices, self-assessments).
      2. Analysis (series, differential and integral calculus, Taylor expansion, multi-variable functions, Fourier analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations).
    2. Other areas: 5 CP (at least one from both points must be covered).
      1. Numerical methods (discretization, direct solution methods for linear systems of equations).
      2. Probability and statistics.
  2. Natural and engineering sciences.
    1. Chemistry and physics: 10 CP (at least one of the three points must be covered).
      1. Electro and magnetostatics.
      2. Structure of matter including atoms and molecules and matter states.
      3. Chemical bonds.
    2. Engineering sciences 20 CP (all points must be covered).
      1. Statics and dynamics.
      2. Thermodynamics.
      3. Fluid and solid mechanics.
  3. IT 5 CP (at least one of the three points must be covered).
    1. Procedural programming.
    2. Linux / Unix operating system.
    3. Programming knowledge in an interpreted language (Shell scripting, Python or equivalent).

Additional information:
English language proficiency can also be proven by the placement test of the RWTH Language Center with level B2 (MK 7).   1. Motivation letter (describing why you want to study Simulation Sciences, what you expect to get from this program and your experience with simulation so far).
  2. Curriculum vitae.
  3. Bachelor certificates (if already available at the time of the application).
  4. Transcript(s) of records.
  5. Two recommendation letters (please note that the letters have to be uploaded electronically within the application process).
  6. For applicants from China, Mongolia, and Vietnam only: APS certificate.
  7. TOEFL or IELTS certificate (see language requirements).
  8. Module catalog.
  9. Supplementary form: if your university does not use the ECTS system please simply fill in your credit points (or leave the cells blank) and mention it in your cover letter (or in any other designated area for comments). If the numbers of lines on the form are not sufficient please group similar courses together and fill in the sum of the credit points.
  10. Optional: GRE score.
