Five Reasons to choose this Master's Program

Course Description
Our societies face urgent crises: migration and displacement, rising authoritarianism, deepening inequality, ecological breakdown, and contested gender norms. The M.A. Social Studies: Crises, Culture, Critique at European University Viadrina equips you to analyze these challenges through social science theory, empirical research methods, and critical perspectives from philosophy, art, media, and history. You'll choose specialization tracks like Borders & Migration or Capitalism & Inequality, design your own research project, and even pursue an optional double degree with Université Paris 8. Graduate ready to understand, critique, and constructively shape society.

This program is ideal if you hold a first university degree of at least 180 ECTS, including 30 ECTS in social or cultural sciences such as sociology, political science, anthropology, geography, or philosophy. You should bring English skills at B2 level, strong analytical curiosity about pressing social issues, and the ambition to combine theoretical depth with hands-on empirical research.
Special Program Features
Critical theory meets empirical methods
Combine social science research methods with critical perspectives from philosophy, media, and art to analyze societal challenges from genuinely multidisciplinary angles.
Study right at Europe's living border
Frankfurt (Oder) sits directly on the German-Polish border, where Europe's integration story unfolds around you each day and shapes the discussions inside the seminar room.
Short distances to active researchers
Teaching happens in small learning communities, so you stay in direct, regular contact with the researchers shaping the field — questions get answered, ideas get discussed routinely.
