Course Description
The master's program in “Specialized Translation and Translation Technologies" of Heidelberg University and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is an international and interdisciplinary double degree program that includes a year abroad.
It focuses on specialized translation in the working languages Spanish, German, and English, translation technologies, and intercultural communication.
Once the program is successfully completed graduates act as multilingual communication experts for the German, Ibero-American and English linguistic, cultural, scientific and economic areas.
Graduates will receive the following degrees:
- M.A. Translation, Kommunikation, Sprachtechnologie „Fachübersetzen und Übersetzungstechnologie“ (Heidelberg University)
- Magíster en Traducción Especializada y Tecnologías de la Traducción (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile)
Structure and organization
The program is offered annually at the beginning of the German summer semester and includes six study and two examination modules. The first year of study is at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, in Chile; and the second year at the University of Heidelberg, in Germany. The study plan also includes a mandatory internship in the second and third semesters. The courses are in-person in German, Spanish, or English.

Bachelor's degree in a translation-related degree program or a related degree program with comparable content, in particular in a language and cultural studies degree program at a German or foreign universitу.

Interested students (German and international) must apply to the Heidelberg University and the Universidad Pontificia Católica de Chile.
Application at Heidelberg University:
- Proof of fulfillment of the access requirements:
- Bachelor's degree with above-average success in a translation-related degree program or a related degree program with comparable content, in particular in a language and cultural studies degree program at a German or foreign university.
- Very good linguistic and cultural competence in the B- or C-languages to be studied in the sense of active and passive language competence at a high level corresponding to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference. Proof can be provided by language certificates or by a bachelor's degree.
- The motivation to study the chosen program and the pursued profession is proven by the explanations in the motivation letter, the CV, and the recommendation letter.
- (If applicable) proof of completed apprenticeship and professional activity, practical activities as well as further achievements and qualifications.
- A transcript of records in German, English, or Spanish of the achievements in the previously completed degree program.
- Declaration of loss/non-loss of the entitlement to take the final exams or of ongoing examinations in the master's degree program in translation studies or similar degree programs in Germany or foreign countries: online form.
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form (German or Spanish), 1-3 DIN A4 pages.
- Personally written motivation letter (German or Spanish) 1 DIN A4 page.
- Two recommendation letters from a university lecturer or supervisor of a completed internship (if applicable).
- Passport copy.
- For applicants from NON-EU/EEA countries: Proof of financial provisions in connection with studies.
- If applicable: officially certified copy or transcript of the certificate of the passed aptitude assessment test, if such a certificate has already been passed in Germany, including the corresponding overview of individual grades.
- If applicable: officially certified copies or transcripts of the certificates of university entrance examinations passed abroad, including the corresponding list of grades and – if available – the letter of admission from the foreign university + officially certified translation.
