Five Reasons to choose this Master's Program
Course Description
How do you engineer the intelligently networked factories of tomorrow? The M.Sc. Systems Engineering at Saarland University trains experts who master mechanical engineering, information technology, and electrical engineering alike — and speak the language of all three disciplines. Built on mathematical fundamentals, this innovation-driven degree teaches you to understand, develop, and optimize the software and control technology behind complex systems. At one of Germany's most international universities — every fifth student comes from abroad — you shape exactly the profile industry is searching for, with seven specializations and early research practice.
This master's program is made for engineers who refuse to stay in one lane: you hold a bachelor's degree in systems engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field — and you love connecting machines, electronics, and software. If you enjoy tinkering, think in systems rather than single parts, and want to shape technology from first idea to finished product, you'll fit right in.
Special Program Features
Management skills built in
Modules in organization, management, and economics complement your technical training — preparing you well to steer complex projects and processes, not just to design them.
Campus Life Meets City Flair
On a green campus near downtown Saarbrücken, you enjoy a vibrant academic and cultural life. Affordable living and the proximity to France and Luxembourg add to the appeal. → More Info
Thesis in industry or academia
Write your master's thesis in a departmental research group, at a cooperating research institute, or with an industrial partner — in Germany or abroad, the choice is yours.
Accreditations
System Accreditation
System Accreditation
System accreditation is the internal quality assurance system of a state or state-recognized higher education institution in Germany. With system accreditation, a higher education institution receives the right to award the seal of the Accreditation Council for its self-assessed study programs.
Requirements
Qualification Requirements
The application requirements for the study program in "Systems Enginееring" are:
in the field of systems engineering or a related field (specifically, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, microsystems engineering or mechatroniсs)
English Language Proficienсу at least B2 (CΕFR)
Applicants can establish their suitability for the program in one of three ways:
- Academic track record: sufficient merit in their previous studies, demonstrated by an overall Bachelor's grade of at least "good" (German grading scale: 2.5)
- Academic references: satisfactory references that give appropriate consideration to the overall grade previously achieved
- Oral interview: an interview conducted by two examiners from the Department of Mechatronics, appointed by the Examination Βοard

Application Procedure & Selection
Application Documents
If you completed your Abitur at a German school with at least six years of English instruction, your Abitur certificate serves as proof of English proficiency. If proof is not yet available, provisional admission is possible on the condition that you demonstrate B2-level proficiency within one semester — for example, through a language coursе.
Applies only to applicants who earned their previous relevant degree outside Germanу.
Testimonials
© Friederike Meyer zu Tittingdorf The Systems Engineering degree at Saarland University won me over quickly — in the research lab, I was able to develop a tactile hand control for electric drives that can be attached to wheelchairs, for example.
I wanted to learn as much as possible and explore very different fields — not commit to a single science, but position myself across disciplines. That's why I ultimately chose Systems Engineering: here, I can look into many areas first, discover what truly interests me, and then specialize in exactly that.
Everything clicked for me when I tested my first self-designed control algorithm on an experimental setup — and saw that what I had worked out in theory actually worked in practice.
