Applied Linguistics study programs

Study Applied Linguistics in Germany (2026/27)

Overview Deadlines

Germany’s Applied Linguistics programs equip international students to address real-world language challenges by combining linguistic theory with practical applications in education, translation, language policy, intercultural communication, and speech therapy. Offered through English-taught curricula at universities collaborating with institutes like the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and language technology leaders such as DeepL, these programs cover sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, and assessment while fostering analytical, problem-solving, and data analysis skills. Germany’s multilingual environment—with its regional dialects, immigrant languages, and international business networks—provides rich research and practice contexts.

Numerus Clausus (Admission Restriction)

For degree courses with a numerus clausus, part of the study places are allocated according to the grade point average (GPA) of the previous degree. Selection is generally based on how many applicants apply for a place. The higher the grade, the more difficult it is to get onto the course. The German grading system ranges from 1.0 (very good) to 6.0 (unsatisfactory).
