Germany is a great place to study history. Having been at the epicenter of two world wars, and as a place where the two superpowers came face to face during the cold war, it provides a unique environment to study German History or Global History. The English-language Masterā€™s programs in History and Ancient Studies offered by German Universities set such international focuses by offering studies in Global or European History or on certain regions, or aspects such as History of Science, International War History, or History of Global Markets. More specific skills for the professional world can be acquired in programs focusing on Conservation, Site Management, Curatorial Studies, Archaeology, or the concept of World Heritage. Thus, students looking to specialize in various aspects of History should find a matching program in the Study Finder.

Application Requirements

When you apply to a Masterā€™s program in History or Ancient History at a German university, you will need to have an academic degree in a related discipline. Many programs accept applicants trained in History or from diverse academic backgrounds such as Art History, Philosophy, Ethnology, Archaeological Sciences, Regional Studies, or related fields. Usually, application tests or interviews are not part of the admission process, students must simply submit required documents. In addition to standard certificates (e.g. first degree certificate, a transcript of records, a language certificate), a CV and a letter of motivation are typically required. For History and Ancient Studies, excellent English-language skills - usually on a C1 level - are a prerequisite for admission, in some cases as well as other relevant language skills, and have to be demonstrated with a language certificate.
