English-language Master’s programs in Sports are offered by some universities in Germany, the German Sports University of Cologne being the most prominent among them. While the various courses deal with different questions regarding sports - the ethics and politics of it, management, performance analysis, and health - it might come as a surprise that in most programs, students don’t actually do sports as part of the curriculum.

Instead, many programs in this subject field are research oriented and often interdisciplinary. They for example intersect with subjects such as Psychology, Political Science, Business Administration or Neuroscience. Yet, many of them don’t lose the practical side of things out of their sight, either; many Master’s degrees in Sports have the objective to prepare students for the business world and enable them to design therapies or trainings themselves. Application Requirements

When you apply to a Master’s program in Germany, universities will usually expect you to have an academic degree in a related discipline. For the subject Sports, this could be a first degree in Sports Science or related disciplines such as Physiotherapy or Biology. Many interdisciplinary programs accept applicants from broad fields, including  social sciences, humanities, Philosophy, Law, Cultural Studies, or Economics, Usually, sports tests or interviews are not part of the admission process on a Master’s level, however, some universities look for applicants interested in sports and with experience in sports competitions. In addition to standard certificates (e.g. first degree certificate, a transcript of records, a language certificate), a CV and a letter of motivation are typically required.
