About the University

The Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences (AEF) has always been at the forefront of agricultural and food sciences. Established in 1946, it has evolved to address the ever-changing needs of society. A significant area of focus for the AEF is its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals, which address fundamental societal development challenges, are closely tied to the production and consumption of agricultural products in numerous sectors.

Being a life science, the AEF recognizes that environmental, agricultural, and food sciences play a pivotal role in addressing these challenges. The faculty's research has been instrumental in this regard, especially due to its innovative methodologies and its interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary focus. In response to the evolving needs of the sector, the AEF has strategically oriented new professorships towards areas such as microbiome research, metabolomics, nutriinformatics, and computational ecosystem services, marking them as central pillars in the life sciences.

The AEF has also made strides in integrating disciplines like plant, animal, agricultural, and food economics, environmental sciences, and nutritional sciences. The goal is to deepen the involvement of various societal stakeholders in framing pertinent research questions, disseminating findings, and formulating potential solutions.

A hallmark of the AEF's approach is its interactive dialogue with policymakers, industry professionals, stakeholders, and the general public. One of the significant emerging trends recognized by the faculty is the integration of computer science in transdisciplinary research in environmental, agricultural and nutritional sciences. This trend is driven by the growing significance of digitalization in the agriculture and food sectors and in academia. Developments like big data, computational analytics, modeling, and IT-supported communication tools are rapidly advancing, and the AEF is at the forefront of integrating these into its curriculum and research.

In this evolving landscape, the AEF believes that the future sustainability of the environment, agricultural and food management systems will be determined by a balance between yield or consumption maximization and ecosystem-centric components of resource and climate protection. This methodological and thematic evolution in research is mirrored in the AEF's educational offerings. The faculty places a particular emphasis on designing and implementing new international master's programs that bridge computer science with agricultural and food sciences, ensuring that its students are well-equipped for the challenges of the future.
