Study Humanities in Germany (2026/27)

Germany is home to one of Europe's deepest intellectual traditions—and its universities make that heritage accessible to international students at little or no cost. Programs in philosophy, history, literature and cultural studies are widely offered in English or bilingual formats, drawing on centuries of scholarship while engaging with contemporary global questions. What distinguishes studying humanities here is the infrastructure.

German universities maintain some of the world's most extensive libraries, archives and manuscript collections, and a growing network of digital humanities labs is opening new ways to analyse texts, map historical data and collaborate across borders. You'll have resources that simply aren't available at most institutions elsewhere.

Curricula tend to be interdisciplinary by design. You might trace a literary movement across continents, examine how philosophical ideas shaped political history, or connect your own cultural background to European intellectual traditions through comparative research. Programs encourage you to develop your own scholarly voice rather than follow a fixed path. Career routes are broader than you might expect. Graduates move into academia, but also into cultural institutions, journalism, publishing, policy work and international organisations—fields where the ability to research deeply, write clearly and think across cultures is in demand. Germany's museums, archives and media landscape offer internship opportunities that build practical experience alongside your studies.
