German Student Applicant Visa

Student Applicant visa (or Visum zur Studienbewerbung) is a type of visa which you can get if you have applied to a German university but do not have an acceptance letter yet, or if you need to prepare yourself in Germany for your studies, for example, by taking a language course, going through the Studienkolleg Preparatory Course, doing a compulsory internship etc. In general, you are considered a student applicant if you are interested in studying in Germany but have not yet been officially admitted to a German university.

Germany Student Visa Costs for Bangladesh

German student visa costs 75€ for Bangladeshis (37.5€ for minors), just like for everyone else. Bangladeshi students have to pay the money in the local currency, in Bangladeshi Taka (BDT), on the interview day at the German Embassy. Hence, it is crucial to always check the up-to-date exchange rate before visiting the Embassy in Bangladesh. For example, as of 10.09.2024, the German student visa fee in Bangladeshi Taka is 9,895 BDT (4,947.5 BDT for minors). As for the payment methods, the German Embassy in Dhaka accepts only cash. No credit card or any other type of payment is allowed.

In general, even if your application is rejected, you cannot get your money back. Put another way, the German study visa fee is non-refundable. Interestingly, Bangladeshi students who have a scholarship from a German public institution (e.g., DAAD) do not have to pay any visa processing fees.

When should Bangladeshis apply for a study visa in Germany?

It is crucial for Bangladeshi students to apply for their German student visa as soon as possible to arrive in Germany on time. Book an appointment even before you receive the letter of admission from your university!

After registering for the German student visa appointment at the German Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladeshi students might end up waiting for about 19 months until they are offered an appointment. It means that, for instance, if you registered for the appointment in March 2024, you will receive the appointment confirmation by around October 2025 for the earliest possible visit to the Embassy in November 2025. The reason for the long waiting times is the incapacity of the German Embassy in Dhaka to cope with the high demand for German study visas among Bangladeshi citizens.

So, considering the fact that the visa processing will also last at least 1.5 months, it might take you around 2 years to get a German student visa from Bangladesh.

Hence the tip from MyGU: Do not wait for the letter of acceptance from your German university to book an appointment at the German Embassy in Dhaka. By registering for the visa appointment immediately after your study program application, you will win some precious extra time and increase your chances of arriving in Germany before the start of the semester. In case you do not have the letter of admission by the time of your appointment, you can just cancel it, or you can also explore the opportunity of getting a German student applicant visa from Bangladesh.

Exceptions

Under certain circumstances, Bangladeshi students applying for a German study visa may get "preferential treatment" with regard to the allocation of appointments. As a Bangladeshi applicant, you might experience shorter waiting times if you fit into one of the following 2 categories:

  1. You are going to do a PhD in Germany;
  2. You won a scholarship from a German institution (e.g., DAAD Scholarship).

If that's the case, you may receive your student visa appointment offer approximately 2-3 months after the registration.

Success rate

You might be asking yourself "What is the success rate of German student visa from Bangladesh?". That is an important question, and we have a clear answer to that! Based on our research conducted in 2022 and 2023, the German study visa success rate for Bangladesh is around 90%. Put differently, approximately 90 out of 100 Bangladeshi students succeed in their visa applications. Consequently, the rejection rate for Bangladeshis is approximately 10%. The major reasons for the rejection are incomplete application and insufficient financial resources.

So, as you can see from the numbers, it is very unlikely that your application for a German study visa will be rejected as long as it is complete, your documents are in good shape, and you have solid proof of sufficient financial resources. In a word, it is quite easy for Bangladeshis to get a German student visa.

However, keep in mind that reaching the application submission stage itself is quite a challenging task in Bangladesh. Surprisingly, there are more chances that Bangladeshis do not arrive in Germany on time not because their study visa application is rejected but because the German Embassy in Bangladesh is not capable of offering a timely appointment to each applicant.

Can Bangladeshi students work in Germany with a student visa?

Yes, Bangladeshi students can work in Germany with a student visa!

Once you convert your student visa into a student residence permit, you will also receive an additional document called Zusatblatt in German. This paper outlines your work rights in Germany. Specifically, as a Bangladeshi student in Germany, you can work 280 days per year part-time (e.g., up to 20 hours per week) or 140 days per year full-time (e.g., more than 20 hours per week).

Besides, you are not allowed to work in a self-employed or freelance capacity in Germany. However, if you are employed as a student assistant at your university, there are no restrictions on the number of working days. Nevertheless, you are still required to notify the German immigration authorities about this job.

And remember, Bangladeshi students are eligible for a German job-seeker visa (also known as the 18-month visa) after successfully completing their studies in Germany!

Eligibility Criteria

Getting a German study visa is not like getting admission into a degree program: the Embassy does not require a specific minimum GPA, a specific number of ECTS points, or a specific subject background - things are much simpler in this case.

Here are the requirements for a German student visa for Bangladeshis:

  1. You should have a letter of admission from a German university;
  2. You should be able to finance your stay in Germany fully.

Hence, Bangladeshi students have to fulfil just 2 requirements to be eligible for a German study visa. Of course, to get the visa, the applicants need to provide the German Mission in Bangladesh with some more documents. We elaborate more on that below.

Germany Student Visa Requirements for Bangladeshis

When applying for a German study visa, it is of utmost importance to present the right documents to the German Embassy in Bangladesh. If your student visa application is not complete, this can lead to the rejection of your application. Hence, you should take the requirements seriously! Here is the checklist of the documents that Bangladeshis have to submit when applying for a study visa for Germany:

Documents Bangladeshis need for a German Student Visa

  1. Application form. You (the applicant) must complete and sign the German student visa application form for Bangladeshis. It is usually quite self-explanatory and easy to fill out: it asks you to provide information regarding your personal details, travel dates, contact details, etc.
  2. Biometric photo. Bangladeshi students should provide 1 biometric picture not older than 6 months. The size of the photo should be 35(W) x 45(H). Your face in this photo should be clearly visible and should occupy 70-80% of the picture. This equals to 32-36mm of height. The background should be without shadows, bright and unicolored, preferably in neutral grey. Further details regarding the photo quality, head position and the rest can be found here.
  3. Passport. In addition to providing their original passports, Bangladeshi students have to provide copies of the first two pages of their passports. The passport itself should have a minimum of 2 free pages. Besides, on the day of your application, it should be valid for at least another 12 months.
  4. Declaration of consent. You must complete and sign the applicant's declaration form. This form requires Bangladeshi applicants to once again provide some basic personal information. Besides, it asks the applicants to attest with a signature that they agree to communicate with the German Embassy in Dhaka exclusively via email and that they will check their emails (including spam folder) every day.
  5. Curriculum vitae. A CV or Résumé is another compulsory document required for the German study visa application. In this paper, prospective Bangladeshi students should provide information regarding their academic background, work experience (including internships), extracurricular activities, and skills.
  6. Motivation Letter. Letter of motivation (LOM) is a document where prospective Bangladeshi students need to convincingly demonstrate their motivation to come to Germany, to seek admission to the specific study program, and to explain why they should be given the opportunity to study in Germany. Important: you should sign the LOM.
  7. Admission letter from a German university. A letter of admission, or Zulassungsbescheid in German, is a document that you receive from the study program or foundation course you applied for. It states that your application was successful and that you are offered a spot at the program.
  8. Proof of language skills. In fact, the German Embassy in Bangladesh should accept the proof of language command approved by the study course you applied for. However, we still suggest double-checking that with the Embassy representatives. In general, certificates like TOEFL and IELTS (in case of English-taught study programs) or Goethe Institut, ÖSD and TestDaF (in case of German-taught study programs) should be accepted by the Embassy in Dhaka.
  9. Academic certificates. For example, a Bachelor's degree with the transcript of records.
  10. Higher secondary education board certificate. Do not forget to include the grade sheet too.
  11. Proof of finances. Here, Bangladeshi students should demonstrate that they are able to cover all their living expenses while in Germany (e.g., accommodation, health insurance, etc.). Currently, the amount to be proved set by the German government is 992 Euros per month or 11,904 Euros per year. Note: In case your study program charges tuition fees, you also need to provide proof of funds demonstrating that you are able to cover those fees.
  12. Health insurance. You have to provide proof of valid health insurance at the time of visa approval.

Take a note:

  • The requested documents should be submitted as originals with one set of attached A4-size copies.
  • The documents should not be stapled.
  • You have to arrange the documents according to the order outlined by the German Embassy in Dhaka.
  • If your documents are in Bengali or any other language, you should also attach an English OR a German translation. In fact, the Embassy prefers German translations.
  • The application should be complete. If a document is missing, the format is wrong, or even the signature is missing, your German student visa application might be rejected.
  • The embassy might request additional documents.

How much money do I need for a German student visa?

Providing proof of finances (Nachweis der Finanzierung in German) is one of the cornerstones for the German study visa application. If the Bangladeshi applicants are not able to provide that proof, their visa application will be rejected.

Currently, Bangladeshi students need 11,904 Euros per year (aka 992 Euros per month) to qualify for a German student visa. So, as long as they can prove that they fulfil this financial requirement, their chances of a successful visa application will drastically increase. But how to prove the availability of this sum?

In fact, there are various ways for Bangladeshi citizens to provide this proof of funds. The most popular ones are arguably blocked account, declaration of commitment from the German resident, and scholarship.

  1. Blocked account. Known as Sperrkonto in German, the blocked account is a special kind of bank account where Bangladeshi students can store the required 11,904 Euros.
  2. Declaration of commitment (also known as a declaration of sponsorship or letter of commitment). Called Verpflichtungserklärung in German, a declaration of commitment is a document with which the German resident assures that s/he will provide financial support to you during your stay in Germany.
  3. Scholarship. If you want the scholarship to serve as proof that you can completely cover your costs while in Germany, you should have a full scholarship (992 EUR per month) provided by German or EU public institutions.

German Student Visa IELTS Requirement

It is possible to get a German student visa without IELTS!

In general, the German Embassy in Bangladesh should accept the same proof of language skills that is recognized by the German study program you applied for. Actually, different study programs in Germany accept different English language certificates. There are even quite a few study courses that, under certain circumstances, do not require any English certificate as long as you have completed your previous studies entirely in English. But again, please double-check this information with the Embassy representatives.

In a word, IELTS is not mandatory for a German student visa: Bangladeshis might also get the visa with a different certificate (e.g., TOEFL, Cambridge) or even without a standardized language test.

Note: If you still decide to take the IELTS, you should have at least a score of 6.5 to get a study visa for Germany. Based on our research, with a 6.5 in IELTS, you will qualify for more than 80% of the English-taught degree courses in Germany. For the sake of comparison, with IELTS 6.0, the percentage drops to below 50.

How to apply?

You might be wondering now: "How to get a Germany student visa from Bangladesh?" For some reason, a lot of people think that applying for a German student visa is a complicated process. Yes, applicants need to be organized and attentive to the details, but it is not rocket science at all! As long as you know where to start and clearly see the bigger picture, you are good to go.

Bearing this background in mind, let us present to you NINE key steps that Bangladeshi students need to take to apply for and get a German student visa:

  1. Apply for a study program in Germany.
  2. Register for the appointment at the Embassy.
  3. Collect the required documents.
  4. Visit the Embassy.
  5. Submit the documents.
  6. Complete the interview.
  7. Pay the visa fee.
  8. Wait for the outcome.
  9. Collect your passport and visa.

Now let us break down the whole application process for you:

1. Apply for a study program in Germany. Having a letter of admission from a German University is an indispensable prerequisite for successful German study visa application. That is why the first step towards the visa should be the application to the German study program.

2. Register for the appointment at the Embassy. Bangladeshis should book their appointment for a German study visa at the German Embassy in Dhaka. It is possible to book the appointment only online via the special application system. There is not option to register via phone or email.

3. Collect the required documents. In addition to the information provided in this article, familiarize yourself with all of the requirements by following the next steps: a) visit the website of the German Embassy in Bangladesh, b) click on "Services", c) then "Visa and Entry to Germany", d) afterwards, scroll down to "Long stay", e) and, finally, click on the "checklist" for the student visa.

Keep in mind: you should have all of the documents at hand by the day of your appointment.

4. Visit the Embassy. Make sure you are at least 15 minutes earlier before the appointment. It is crucial not to be late for the appointment and not to miss it. If you do so, you will have to wait for a new appointment offer. Therefore, if you do not visit the German Embassy on time, your student visa application process will be prolonged by some more weeks or even months, making your chances of arriving in Germany on time extremely slim.

Note: Despite the fact that the Embassy in Dhaka states on its website that appointments will only be rescheduled after being late for more than 15 minutes, we still strongly recommend visiting the Embassy not just on time but even a bit earlier. This will ensure that you are on the safe side.

5. Submit the documents. It is of utmost importance to submit the documents in the exact way and shape requested by the German Embassy in Bangladesh. If you do not follow the instructions, your application may be rejected.

6. Complete the interview. The interview will last approximately 10-15 minutes. During this time, Bangladeshi students should clearly explain why they selected their German study program and how it aligns with their future career goals. Using information from the CV and LOM during the interview will strengthen your arguments and help you to present a more compelling case.

Tip: Do not forget about the importance of the dress code!  Business casual is always a good choice for visa interviews. You do not have to wear a suit and tie - that is not a must at all. At the same time, avoid wearing something that is too informal and disrupts your solid look. In addition to contributing to your confident appearance, business casual attire will help you to make a good first impression on the interviewer.

7. Pay the visa fee. Closely follow the instructions from the German Embassy in Dhaka to correctly and swiftly complete the payment procedure for the student visa.

8. Wait for the outcome. After completing the payment, the Embassy will start processing your application. You will have to wait at least 6 weeks to hear from them.

9. Collect your passport and visa. If the outcome is positive, you will receive your passport back together with the visa and will be able to kick off your German study adventure! In case you get a negative response, you will receive your passport together with a refusal letter outlining the reason(s) for the denial and informing you about the potential future steps.

Student Visa Processing Time (2026)

How long is the visa valid?

A German student visa for Bangladeshis is usually valid for 3 months. However, once in Germany, Bangladeshis must apply for a German student residence permit from the local foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde). This replaces the original study visa and is valid until the end of the course. The study visa for Germany is valid for a total of 1-3 years, depending on the length of the course. If you were unable to complete your studies within the standard time frame, you also have the option of extending your study visa/residence permit.

German Student Residence Permit for Bangladeshis

As explained above, once in Germany, Bangladeshi students must convert their German student visa into a German student residence permit before the 3-month visa expires. Our recommendation to prospective Bangladeshi students is to apply for a student residence permit 6 weeks before the student visa expires.

German study residence permit requirements for Bangladeshi citizens

The documents that Bangladeshis need to apply for a German student residence permit are usually listed on the website of the relevant Foreigners' Authority office. Depending on the city or town you reside in, there might be some slight differences in requirements. After looking through various requirements across different locations in Germany, our team came up with the following general checklist of documents that you will usually need for your student residence permit application:

German student residence permit checklist for Bangladeshis

  • Completed application form. You can find the application forms on the website of the Foreigners' Authority responsible for your application. The form is usually quite self-explanatory and easy to fill in. It asks you to provide information regarding your personal details, like your first and last names, date of birth, email, address, marital status, etc. Here is one of the examples of the German student residence permit application form.
  • Valid Passport (including entry visa). Make sure that your passport's expiry date is not very close and that it has enough free pages left.
  • Current biometric passport photo. Specifics are the same as in the case of the German student visa.
  • Registration of the address (Meldebescheinigung). After arriving in Germany, Bangladeshis have two weeks during which they have to register their new German address at the local citizens' office (Bürgeramt). After doing that, you will receive a paper confirming your registration. This is the paper that you need for your student residence permit application.
  • Proof of valid health insurance. You can ask your German health insurance provider to send you a certificate, which demonstrates that you are indeed insured by the given company.
  • Proof of sufficient funds. Like in the case of the German student visa, here as well Bangladeshi students need to prove that they are able to secure their livelihood. As mentioned above, this can be done, for example, through a blocked account, a declaration of commitment or a scholarship.
  • Certificate of enrollment. This document (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung in German) proves that you are enrolled in the specific program of the given university. Usually, you will receive it both online (through your university portal) and via physical post.

German student residence permit application process for Bangladeshi nationals

You might be asking yourself now, "How exactly can I get a German student residence permit?" That is a fair question, and here comes our answer to it. Currently, in most cases, Bangladeshi students have to complete the following three-step procedure to apply for and get a residence permit in Germany:

  1. Send the application package to the authorities.
  2. Submit the biometric data and complete the payment.
  3. Collect the residence permit card.

Now let us break down the whole procedure for you:

1. Send the application package to the authorities. This can be done via email or post.

2. Submit the biometric data and complete the payment.  After you send the application, the authorities will get in touch with you (usually via email), stating that your complete application was well received and checked. Besides, they will inform you about the specific day you have to visit their office so they can collect your biometric data. Put another way, you have to appear in person to:

  • Sign the necessary documents;
  • Hand in your fingerprints;
  • Show your passport;
  • Submit the biometric photo;
  • Pay the residence permit fee. German student residence permit usually costs around 100 EUR for Bangladeshis. In most cases, the Foreigners' office accepts payment by both cash and EC card.

3. Collect the residence permit card. After the biometric data is collected and the payment is made, you immediately receive a paper, which serves as a substitute for the residence permit card. It states when the card will be ready and that this substitute paper is valid for 3 months. You will be informed whether you will receive the card by post or if you need to visit the office once again to pick it up. So, the final step is getting the card either via physical mail or in person at the immigration office. It is noteworthy that the German student residence permit processing time for Bangladeshi students is circa 4-6 weeks. The countdown starts as soon as you submit the biometric data and complete the payment.

Just like with the requirements, the procedure of applying for a German study residence permit may also vary based on your location in Germany. That is why, in this case as well, it is crucial to check the websites of the relevant Foreigners' Authority offices.
