German Student Applicant visa

Student Applicant visa (or Visum zur Studienbewerbung) is a type of visa which you can get if you have applied to a German university but do not have an acceptance letter yet, or if you need to prepare yourself in Germany for your studies, for example, by taking a language course, going through the Studienkolleg Preparatory Course, doing a compulsory internship etc. In general, you are considered a student applicant if you are interested in studying in Germany but have not yet been officially admitted to a German university.

German Student Visa for Pakistanis: Fees

What is the price for a German student visa from Pakistan?

German student visa costs 75€ for Pakistanis (37.5€ for minors), just like for everyone else. Pakistani students have to pay the money in the local currency, in Pakistani Rupees (PKR). Hence, it is crucial to always check the up-to-date exchange rate before visiting the German Embassy/Consulate in Pakistan. For example, as of 06.09.2024, the German student visa fee in Pakistani Rupees is 23,205 PKR (11,602.5 PKR for minors).

As for the payment methods, they differ across the German missions:

  • If you have to apply via the German Consulate General in Karachi, you have to pay the fee in cash
  • In case the German Embassy in Islamabad is responsible for your application, you will receive a payment request during your appointment. You must take it to the Habib Bank Limited, Diplomatic Enclave Branch and complete the payment.

In general, even if your application is rejected, you cannot get your money back. Put another way, the German study visa fee is non-refundable. Interestingly, Pakistani students who have a scholarship from a German public institution (e.g., DAAD) do not have to pay any visa processing fees.

Additional fees for a study visa in Germany

Pakistani students applying through the German Embassy in Islamabad have to budget extra 850 PKR for the whole study visa application process. That is because Pakistani applicants need to pay 500 PKR so that the Embassy can send them their passport back via the courier service, while 350 PKR will be charged by the Habib Bank as kind of a commission fee. Thus, the total German student visa cost for Pakistanis applying via the Embassy in Islamabad is around 24,055 Pakistani Rupees.

German Student Visa for Pakistanis: Processing Time

How long does it take to get a German student visa from Pakistan?

When should Pakistanis apply for a study visa in Germany?

It is crucial for Pakistani students to apply for their German student visa as soon as possible to arrive in Germany on time. Book an appointment even before you receive the letter of admission!

After registering for the German student visa appointment at the German Embassy/Consulate in Pakistan, Pakistani students might end up waiting for about 12 months until they are offered an appointment. Moreover, the diplomatic mission might even cancel their registrations after some time. The reason for long waiting times and cancellations is the incapacity of the German Missions in Pakistan to cope with the high demand for German study visas among Pakistani citizens.

So, taking into account the fact that the visa processing might also take long (up to 10 weeks), the whole German student visa application process for Pakistanis might last for more than 14 months in total!

Hence the tip from MyGU: Do not wait for the letter of acceptance from your German university to book an appointment at the German Embassy or Consulate in Pakistan. By registering for the visa appointment immediately after your study program application, you will win some precious extra time and increase your chances of arriving in Germany before the start of the semester. In case you do not have the letter of admission by the time of your appointment, you can just cancel it, or you can also explore the opportunity of getting a German student applicant visa from Pakistan.

Exceptions

Under certain circumstances, Pakistani students applying for a German study visa can expect a "prioritized treatment" with regard to the allocation of appointments. As a Pakistani applicant, you can expect shorter waiting times if you fit into one of the following 3 categories:

  1. You are applying for a Master's program with a CGPA of at least 3.7;
  2. You are going to do a PhD in Germany;
  3. You won a scholarship from a German institution (e.g., DAAD Scholarship).

German study visa success rate for Pakistan

You might be asking yourself "What is the Germany student visa ratio for Pakistanis?". That is an important question, and we have a clear answer to that! Based on our research conducted in 2022 and 2023, the German student visa success rate for Pakistan is around 90%. Put differently, approximately 90 out of 100 Pakistani students succeed in their German student visa application. Consequently, the rejection rate for a German student visa for Pakistanis is approximately 10%. The major reasons for the rejection are incomplete application and insufficient financial resources.

So, as you can see from the numbers, it is very unlikely that your application for a German study visa will be rejected as long as your application is complete, your documents are in good shape, and you have solid proof of sufficient financial resources. In a word, it is quite easy for Pakistanis to get a German student visa.

However, keep in mind that in Pakistan, reaching the submission stage of the German student visa itself is quite a challenging task if you are not a PhD applicant, a Master's program applicant with a very high GPA, or a scholarship holder. Interestingly, while getting a German visa is not difficult as long as you meet all the basic requirements, getting an opportunity to actually submit the application is a complicated issue.

Thus, there are more chances that Pakistanis do not get a study visa for Germany, not because their application is rejected, but because the German Embassy/Consulate in Pakistan is not capable of offering an appointment to each and every applicant.

Can Pakistani students work in Germany with a student visa?

Yes, Pakistani students can work in Germany with a student visa! Once you convert your student visa into a student residence permit, you will also receive an additional document called Zusatblatt in German. This paper outlines your work rights in Germany. Specifically, as a Pakistani student in Germany, you can work 280 days per year part-time (e.g., up to 20 hours per week) or 140 days per year full-time (e.g., more than 20 hours per week).

Additionally, as a student from Pakistan, you are not allowed to work in a self-employed or freelance capacity in Germany. However, if you are employed as a student assistant at your university, there are no restrictions on the number of working days. Nevertheless, you are still required to notify the German immigration authorities about this job.

And remember, Pakistani students are eligible for a German job-seeker visa (also known as the 18-month visa) after successfully completing their studies in Germany!

How much proof of money do Pakistanis need for a German student visa?

Providing proof of finances (Nachweis der Finanzierung in German) is one of the cornerstones for the German study visa application. If the Pakistani applicants are not able to provide that proof, their visa application will be rejected.

Currently, Pakistani students need at least 11,904 Euros per year (aka 992 Euros per month) for a German student visa. So, as long as the Pakistanis can prove that they fulfil this financial requirement, their chances of a successful visa application will drastically increase. Study Visa for Germany from Pakistan without IELTS

Yes, Pakistanis can get a German student visa without IELTS!

It should be emphasized once again that, in general, the German Embassy/Consulate in Pakistan accepts the proof of language skills that is recognized by the German study program you applied for. Actually, different study programs in Germany accept different English language certificates. There are even quite a few study courses that do not require any English certificate as long as you have completed your previous studies entirely in English.

Therefore, IELTS is not mandatory for a German student visa. Pakistanis might also get the visa with a different certificate (e.g., TOEFL, Cambridge) or even without a standardized language test.

Tip: Do not forget about the importance of the dress code!

Business casual is always a good choice for visa interviews. You do not have to wear a suit and tie - that is not a must at all. At the same time, avoid wearing something that is too informal and disrupts your solid look. In addition to contributing to your confident appearance, business casual attire will help you to make a good first impression on the interviewer.

8. Pay the visa fee

Closely follow the instructions from the German diplomatic missions in Pakistan to correctly and swiftly complete the payment procedure for the student visa.

9. Wait for the outcome

After completing the payment, the Embassy/Consulate will start processing your application. They will get back to you in up to 10 weeks with the response.

10. Collect your passport and visa

If the outcome is positive, you will receive your passport back together with the visa and will be able to kick off your German study adventure! In case you get a negative response, you will receive your passport together with a refusal letter outlining the reason(s) for the denial and informing you about the possible next steps.

Visa for International Students

How long is a German student visa valid for Pakistanis?

Initially, a German student visa for Pakistanis is valid for 3 months (under certain circumstances, Pakistani students can also get a 6-month visa). However, when in Germany, Pakistanis must apply for a German student residence permit through the local Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde), which will replace the original study visa and will be valid until the end of the degree course.

Thus, in fact, the German study visa for Pakistanis is valid for 1-3 years in total, depending on the duration of their study program. If you were unable to complete your studies within the standard timeframe, you also have the option to extend the visa/residence permit.

German Student Residence Permit for Pakistanis

As already explained, after arriving in Germany, Pakistani students have to convert their German student visa to a German student residence permit before the 3-month (or the 6-month) visa expires. Our recommendation for prospective Pakistani students is to apply for a student residence permit 6 weeks before the student visa expires.

German study residence permit requirements for Pakistani citizens

The documents that Pakistanis need to apply for a German student residence permit are usually listed on the website of the relevant Foreigners' Authority office. Depending on the city or town you reside in, there might be some slight differences in requirements. After looking through various requirements across different locations in Germany, our team came up with the following general checklist of documents that you will usually need for your student residence permit application:

German student residence permit checklist for Pakistanis

  • Completed application form.
    • You can find the application forms on the website of the Foreigners' Authority responsible for your application. The form is usually quite self-explanatory and easy to fill in. It asks you to provide information regarding your personal details, like your first and last names, date of birth, email, address, marital status, etc. Here is one of the examples of the German student residence permit application form.

  • Valid Passport (including entry visa).
    • Make sure that your passport's expiry date is not very close and that it has enough free pages left.

  • Current biometric passport photo.
    • Specifics are the same as in the case of the German student visa.

  • Registration of the address (Meldebescheinigung).
    • After arriving in Germany, Pakistanis have two weeks during which they have to register their new German address at the local citizens' office (Bürgeramt). After doing that, you will receive a paper confirming your registration. This is the paper that you need for your student residence permit application.

  • Proof of valid health insurance.
    • You can ask your German health insurance provider to send you a certificate, which demonstrates that you are indeed insured by the given company.

  • Proof of sufficient funds.
    • Like in the case of the German student visa, here as well Pakistani students need to prove that they can secure their livelihood. As mentioned above, this can be done, for example, through a blocked account, a declaration of commitment or a scholarship.

  • Certificate of enrollment.
    • This document (called Immatrikulationsbescheinigung in German) proves that you are enrolled in the specific program of the given university. Usually, you will receive it both online (through your university portal) and via physical post.

German student residence permit application process for Pakistani nationals

You might be asking yourself now, "How exactly can I get a German student residence permit?". That is a fair question, and here comes our answer to it. Currently, in most cases, Pakistani students have to complete the following three-step procedure to apply for and get a residence permit in Germany:

  1. Send the application package to the authorities.
  2. Submit the biometric data and complete the payment.
  3. Collect the residence permit card.

Now let us break down the whole German student residence permit application procedure for Pakistanis step-by-step.

1. Send the application package to the authorities.

This can be done via email or post.

2. Submit the biometric data and complete the payment.

After you send the application, the authorities will get in touch with you (usually via email), stating that your complete application was well received and checked. Besides, they will inform you about the specific day you have to visit their office so they can collect your biometric data. Put another way, you have to appear in person to

  • Sign the necessary documents;
  • Hand in your fingerprints;
  • Show your passport;
  • Submit the biometric photo;
  • Pay the residence permit fee. German student residence permit usually costs around 100 EUR for Pakistanis. In most cases, the Foreigners' office accepts payment by both cash and EC card.

3. Collect the residence permit card.

After the biometric data is collected and the payment is made, you immediately receive a paper, which serves as a substitute for the residence permit card. It states when the card will be ready and that this substitute paper is valid for 3 months. You will be informed whether you will receive the card by post or if you need to visit the office once again to pick it up. So, the final step is getting the card either via physical mail or in person at the immigration office. It is noteworthy that the processing time for the German student residence permit for Pakistani students is circa 4-6 weeks. The countdown starts as soon as you submit the biometric data and pay the fee.

Just like with the requirements, the procedure of applying for a German study residence permit may also vary based on your location in Germany. That is why, in this case as well, it is crucial to check the websites of the relevant Foreigners' Authority offices.
