Five Reasons to choose this Bachelor's Program

Course Description
Shape tomorrow's materials with nature as your blueprint. This fully English-taught bachelor's fuses materials science, bionics, and engineering—teaching you to design lightweight, sustainable, high-performance materials inspired by crab shells and moth eyes. You'll master polymers, optics, biomechanics, and chemistry through hands-on laboratory work, then specialize in one of three future-focused elective profiles. A fifth-semester internship or exchange places you inside real research and industry projects worldwide. Graduate ready to engineer the breakthroughs driving automotive, aviation, medical technology, photonics, and the bioeconomy.

This program suits curious, science-minded applicants fascinated by how nature solves engineering problems. If you enjoy chemistry, physics, and mathematics, like hands-on lab work, and want to build sustainable, lightweight, high-performance materials, you'll thrive here. Ideal for future engineers and scientists aiming for research or innovation-driven industry roles.
Special Program Features
Wide-open career paths
Graduates step into automotive, aviation, medical technology, photonics, and the bioeconomy—or continue to a master's—giving this degree unusually broad career reach.
Affordable, student-friendly Lippstadt
Living costs in this calm Westphalian town run below the regional average, so your rent and everyday spending stretch much further here than in nearby big cities like Cologne.
Well-equipped modern laboratories
Instrumental analysis, optics, and materials-testing facilities let you work directly with the measurement and characterization tools professionals use in industry and research. → More Info

Testimonials
What I remember most fondly is the interdisciplinary orientation of the program, the small study groups, and the close interaction with the professors. During my studies, I was able to gain international experience through an internship abroad in Mozambique as well as my bachelor's thesis at TalTech in Estonia.
At the interface between biology and technology, I work on understanding the principles of natural lightweight structures, such as those of single-celled marine organisms, and translating them into applications. The projects are diverse and include, for example, the optimization of prosthetics, wheel rims, and offshore installations.
Already during my practical semester in Switzerland, I was able to gain valuable experience for my later professional life at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, Empa. While developing optical polymer fibers, I had the opportunity to apply the research methods I had learned in a hands-on setting. The development of new customer-specific masterbatches, as well as the analysis and further development of existing products, constantly present new challenges.
