Essen: State Exam Programs with NC

Essen offers international students a dynamic educational experience at the University of Duisburg-Essen, one of Germany's largest universities with strengths in medicine, economics, engineering, and social sciences, alongside the renowned Folkwang University of the Arts—one of Europe's leading institutions for music, theatre, dance, and design. This vibrant city in the heart of the Ruhr region embodies Germany's successful transformation from industrial powerhouse to cultural and educational centre, and nowhere is that evolution more visible than at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, where massive former industrial buildings now house design studios, museums, and creative spaces that provide unique settings for artistic and academic exploration. Students benefit from exceptional cultural offerings that rival cities twice Essen's size: the Folkwang Museum holds one of Germany's finest art collections, the Aalto Theatre presents world-class opera, and a thriving independent scene fills former warehouses and factory halls with exhibitions, concerts, and events. Despite its urban energy, nearly half the city is covered by parks and woodlands, including the expansive Grugapark, creating surprising green escapes between lectures.

For degree courses with a numerus clausus, part of the study places are allocated according to the grade point average (GPA) of the previous degree. Selection is generally based on how many applicants apply for a place. The higher the grade, the more difficult it is to get onto the course. The German grading system ranges from 1.0 (very good) to 6.0 (unsatisfactory).
