Study Buddhist Studies in Hamburg (2026/27)

Germany’s Buddhist Studies programs offer international students a unique opportunity to explore Buddhism as both a historical tradition and a living practice, combining world-class philological research with contemporary perspectives. Building on Germany’s pioneering role in Western Buddhist scholarship, institutions such as Hamburg University, Heidelberg’s South Asia Institute, and LMU Munich provide access to unrivaled resources, including extensive Sanskrit and Pali manuscript collections, Tibetan texts, and Asian art holdings in museums like Berlin’s Museum of Asian Art. Students engage in interdisciplinary study covering Buddhist languages (Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Classical Chinese), textual criticism, Buddhist philosophy, meditation and contemplative practices, art and iconography, and anthropology of living Buddhist communities. The curriculum also addresses modern issues such as Buddhist ethics in relation to artificial intelligence, environmentalism, and secular mindfulness, while incorporating digital humanities and cross-cultural research.

Numerus Clausus (Admission Restriction)

For degree courses with a numerus clausus, part of the study places are allocated according to the grade point average (GPA) of the previous degree. Selection is generally based on how many applicants apply for a place. The higher the grade, the more difficult it is to get onto the course. The German grading system ranges from 1.0 (very good) to 6.0 (unsatisfactory).
