The master's degree in Geography provides students with theoretical and practical skills, building on an undergraduate degree in geography or a related subject, to further qualify themselves in the professional and research field. Graduates can record, describe, analyze, and explain social and natural science phenomena based on quantitative and qualitative methods. They have theoretical and practical knowledge in various subject areas of geography as well as in an inter- and transdisciplinary context. Graduates can carry out and further process both fieldwork and analyses in the laboratory or at the workplace. They have acquired in-depth knowledge of evaluating the natural and socio-cultural living environment and can transfer knowledge and dialogue across disciplines. Graduates can learn in a self-directed manner, critically reflect on their own and others' results and statements, and place them in the existing knowledge context. They can independently work on and answer new scientific questions within a limited time. At the same time, they develop specialist and key qualifications that are important for professional success. These include, for example, geodata analysis and processing, environmental planning, economic development, urban development, physical-geographical mapping, etc. As part of their specialist and interdisciplinary qualifications, they therefore have the competency profile taught at the University of Heidelberg to succeed in the job market both inside and outside the university.
