Qualification Requirements


Previous Degree

Bachelor's degree in biology or a related subject (e.g. geoecology, landscape ecology, agricultural science, forestry, environmental sciences, bioinformatics) with a specialization in biology.

Knowledge in at least six of the following areas with a total of 60 credit points must be proven:

  • General botany,
  • General zoology,
  • Botanical systematics,
  • Zoological systematics,
  • Plant physiology,
  • Tierphysiologie,
  • Forest botany,
  • Agrobiology or organic farming,
  • Plant nutrition,
  • Plant Ecology,
  • Vegetation ecology,
  • Microbiology,
  • Genetics,
  • General ecology,
  • Animal ecology or wildlife biology,
  • Environmental or Conservation Biology,
  • Biogeography,
  • Biochemistry,
  • Bioinformatics.

Application Documents


Applicants who have already completed their first professional degree should enclose the following documents with their application:

  1. Examination certificate and bachelor certificate.
  2. Transcript of Records.
  3. Certificate of university entrance qualification (in particular general higher education entrance qualification, subject-related higher education entrance qualification, university entrance qualification) or a certificate recognized as equivalent by law or by the responsible state authority.
  4. Proof of the required knowledge of the English language (see language requirements).
  5. A tabular CV.
  6. A meaningful letter of motivation (max. 2 pages).

Other documents for which additional admission points can be awarded in the selection process (see selection process below):

  • Summary of the bachelor thesis.
  • If available, proof of relevant additional qualifications.
  • If available, proof of achievements in student self-administration.

Applicants who have not yet completed their first degree qualifying for a profession, please enclose the following documents with the application documents:

  1. A resume.
  2. A meaningful letter of motivation (max. 2 pages).
  3. A transcript of records for all modules completed so far, the sum of which must be at least 140 CP.
  4. Proof that the completion of the first professionally qualifying degree can be achieved by the start of the master's degree (i.e. all examinations must be taken by September 30th, but not yet assessed).

Evidence is provided by a note on the transcript of records or by the form "Certificate of the expected completion of the course" (this will be made available to you during the application process on AlmaWeb or you can download it from the download area of ​​this homepage).

Attention: Applicants who do not complete their first degree by September 30th, can not be enrolled in the master's program Biodiversity, Ecology and Evolution at the University of Leipzig.
