Five Reasons to choose this Master's Program
Course Description
The MSc Marine Geosciences study program at Kiel University (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, CAU) explores the depths of the oceans and integrates multiple disciplines in the marine sciences such as marine geology, oceanography, environmental sciences. This English-language master's program not only enhances your foundational knowledge from your bachelor's degree but also equips you with advanced skills to address pressing environmental and societal challenges, focusing on coastal geology, marine geochemistry, marine resources, and the ocean's role in the Earth's climate system.
The study program MSc Marine Geosciences offers an interdisciplinary, wide-ranging scientific course with numerous practical experiences, hands-on experiences in the laboratory and opportunities for field work at sea and on land as a basis for your professional career. You are invited to join the multi-disciplinary marine research landscape at Kiel University within the university’s research focus Kiel Marine Science (https://www.uni-kiel.de/en/research/priority-research-areas/kiel-marine-science) and in collaboration with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel (https://www.geomar.de/en), and start your career as a marine geoscientist in industry or academia, or alike. Join us on our expedition to learn more about the better part of our planet and play a role in its future.
Prospective students should have a strong grasp of basic scientific subjects as well as a good foundation in geosciences, geophysics and mineralogy. We welcome students from a BSc in Geology, but also from other disciplines, if pre-requisites are met (e.g. BSc in Oceanography, Environmental Sciences or Geography).
Special Program Features
Embark on Real Research Expeditions
Experience hands-on learning like never before with ship-based teaching aboard the RV Alkor. This unique feature of the Marine Geosciences program at Kiel University includes two specialized modules where you'll engage in actual research expeditions working alongside seasoned researchers. Many of our students actually join “real” expeditions on research vessels, especially within the framework of their MSc theses, but also as a student worker.
Global Academic Collaborations
Engage in summer schools, specialized courses, and research stays for your MSc thesis across Europe and beyond. You can profit from the fact that all our lecturers are also researchers with contacts all over the world. These opportunities not only enhance your educational experience but also prepare you for a global career in marine sciences.
Explore Geosciences in the Great Outdoors
From multi-day excursions to the Wadden Sea and Sylt to explorations in the Mediterranean, you'll get your hands dirty in real-world geological environments, both on land an on sea. These field experiences are designed to enrich your academic knowledge with practical skills and a deeper understanding of marine geosciences.
