Five Reasons to choose this Master's Program
Course Description
Would you like to dive into the world of functional materials? The M.Sc. Materials Science program at TU Darmstadt offers you just that opportunity! The course focuses on understanding and customizing materials such as ceramics, semiconductors, energy materials, and nanomaterials. Core subjects like quantum mechanics, material modeling, surface science, and material analytics are key components of the curriculum. What's more, various accompanying research labs provide hands-on experience, allowing you to apply the theoretical content learned in practical settings. From theory to application, this program is your passport to the materials shaping the 21st century!
Special Program Features
Seize the opportunity to earn a Double Degree
As a student of the M.Sc. Materials Science program at TU Darmstadt, you have the special privilege to walk away with not one, but two degrees! Owing to the double-degree arrangements that TU Darmstadt shares with several partner universities, you get to maximize your learning in two years. It's a two-for-one deal, and a truly remarkable chance!
Opt for a flexible Part-Time track
The M.Sc. Materials Science program accommodates your lifestyle with its part-time option. This alternative pathway allows you to spread your course load over 6 to 8 semesters instead of the standard 4. It's all about providing you the flexibility to balance your studies with other life commitments.
Experience life in a Science Hub
Residing in Darmstadt, the city of science, situates you amidst global companies and research institutes. Not only is it a nexus for international conferences, its location in Europe's heart facilitates exciting travel opportunities. It's an urban experience, a research hub, and a cultural gateway all in one.

System Accreditation
System accreditation is the internal quality assurance system of a state or state-recognized higher education institution in Germany. With system accreditation, a higher education institution receives the right to award the seal of the Accreditation Council for its self-assessed study programs.
Requirements
Qualification Requirements
The application requirements for the study program in “Materials Scienсе” are:
Bachelor's degree in Materials Science (or equivalent).
A background in the fundamentals of Materials Science is expected. This contains engineering elements but goes beyond. In particular, knowledge about semiconductors, functional ceramics, metals, and physical chemistry, including quantum mechanics, is required. Applicants with a distinct engineering background – mainly electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, automotive, chemical, petrochemical, process, and textile engineers – can only be accepted in exceptional cases. The admission committee may require applicants to attend additional courses to achieve sufficient equivalency.
Applicants with bachelor's degrees in related subjects such as physics or chemistry are highly encouraged to apply. Materials engineers with a strong focus on Materials Science may also be considered. “Strong focus” means that you took additional elective courses in Materials Sciencе.
Practical internship of a duration of at least 6 weeks. This industrial internship may also be done subsequently during studies but has to be completed - including the report on the internship - before the beginning of the master thesis. If the internship was already passed for the bachelor course in Materials Science at TU Darmstadt, this requirement is also fulfilled for the Master course.
Please note that there will be new examination regulations introduced for the winter semester 2024/2025, which means students only need this proof until the summer of 2023.
