Studying Dutch to become a secondary school teacher means teaching students the language of our closest neighbor—a language that is closer to German than any other, yet opens the door to a unique and fascinating culture. As a Dutch teacher, you show young people that the Netherlands is much more than tulips, bicycles, and cheese: it is a country with a rich history of art and literature, from Rembrandt to Harry Mulisch, a leading European trading partner, and a neighbor with whom we have close historical and present-day ties. Especially in regions close to the border – North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony – Dutch is of practical use for studies, work, and everyday life.
