Low German - Teaching Degree State Exam Programs in Germany: Application Deadlines (2026/27)

Germany offers international students a specialized Teaching Degree in Low German (Plattdeutsch) that blends the preservation of a centuries-old linguistic heritage with contemporary, research-based pedagogy in one of the few regions where this historic Germanic variety still plays a living cultural role. The program provides comprehensive training in Low German linguistics, dialectology, literature, and cultural history, paired with modern teaching methodologies tailored to regional and heritage language education. Studying in northern Germany—where Low German originated and retains official protection—gives students authentic immersion through direct interaction with native speakers, participation in cultural festivals, and engagement with local media that actively use the language.
