The University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig (HMT Leipzig) is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious institutions for music and theatre education. Founded in 1843 as the Conservatory of Music by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, it was the first music university in Germany and gained its current form in 1992 through the merger of the Leipzig Academy of Music and the Leipzig Academy of Theatre, whose origins date back to 1875/1876. Today, around 1,200 students from across the globe study a wide range of programmes in music, theatre and related fields. HMT Leipzig is dedicated to providing professional training for musicians, music educators and actors at the highest international level, emphasising innovative teaching, individual support and the integration of theory and practice.
