The Berliner Hochschule für Technik (BHT) is a public university of applied sciences. Founded in 1971, the institution's roots date back to 1823. The BHT enrolls approximately 13,000 students across eight faculties in Berlin's Wedding district. With over 70 bachelor's and master's programs, BHT is the largest provider of engineering education in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. The university focuses on technical disciplines, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, civil engineering, biotechnology, and business administration. The BHT offers English-taught master's programs in computational engineering, environmental engineering, project management, and screen-based media to its international student population, hailing from over 100 countries. As a public university, the BHT charges standard semester fees of around €300 and requires German language proficiency (typically B2–C1 level) for most bachelor's programs. However, several master's programs are taught entirely in English, and proof of English proficiency is sufficient for admission. The university's Wedding location in northern Berlin offers lower living costs than central districts while maintaining good public transportation connections. Most programs include mandatory 20-week internships that provide practical experience in Berlin's growing tech sector and traditional engineering firms. BHT's applied research focus includes partnerships with regional companies in the automotive, renewable energy, and construction sectors. However, as a Fachhochschule, BHT emphasizes practical skills over theoretical research. This prepares graduates primarily for technical and engineering roles in industry rather than for academic careers. Employment rates vary by field, being stronger in traditional engineering disciplines than in newer interdisciplinary programs.
