Founded in 1899 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Friedensau Adventist University (Theological University of Friedensau) has been state-recognized since 1990. This small, private religious university is located in the village of Friedensau (population 500) near Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt and has approximately 200 students. This denominational institution exclusively offers bachelor's and master's programs in theology and Christian social work. Specialized degrees are available in Adventist studies, mission studies, and music therapy. Instruction is primarily in German, though some theology courses are available in English. As an Adventist institution, campus life follows religious practices, including observing the Sabbath on Saturdays, when no classes or activities occur; vegetarian dining halls that follow Adventist health principles; required chapel attendance; and behavioral codes that prohibit alcohol and tobacco. This creates an environment that is fundamentally different from that of secular German universities. Located in a rural village in eastern Germany, 120 kilometers from Berlin and 40 kilometers from Magdeburg, the university is largely dependent on the university for housing, meals, and social activities. The community is primarily made up of Adventist students and faculty, and there are minimal amenities beyond campus facilities. Though private tuition fees apply, they are generally lower than those of other private universities. Most international students come from Adventist communities worldwide or pursue careers in Adventist organizations because the theology degrees primarily prepare pastors for Adventist churches, and social work graduates often work in church-affiliated institutions. The small enrollment enables close mentorship, but it limits academic diversity and social options. Therefore, Friedensau is specifically suitable for committed Adventist students seeking denominational theological education or for those comfortable with strict religious environments. It is not suitable for students seeking broad academic exposure or typical German university experiences.
