The Helmut Schmidt University (HSU), founded in 1973 on the initiative of then Federal Minister of Defence Helmut Schmidt and later named in his honour, is a public military university in Hamburg with around 2,500 students and one of two institutions established by the Bundeswehr to educate and train officers. Its distinctive campus combines modern facilities and green spaces, offering a unique blend of military training and academic education. HSU provides a wide range of programmes in engineering, humanities, social sciences, and business, with particular strengths in automotive and telecommunications engineering as well as interdisciplinary studies (ISA) that foster critical thinking and leadership skills. Notable for its trimester system, the university enables students to complete a bachelor’s degree in just over two years and a master’s degree in less than two, ensuring a total study period of under four years.
