Westfälische Hochschule - Westphalian University of Applied Sciences: Bachelor Programs without Admission Restriction / NC-Free (2026/27)

Westfälische Hochschule, founded in 1992, is a public university of applied sciences with approximately 9,000 students across three campuses in Gelsenkirchen (260,000 residents), Bocholt (71,000 residents), and Recklinghausen (110,000 residents) in North Rhine-Westphalia's Ruhr region. This regional Fachhochschule offers over 60 bachelor's and master's programs in engineering, computer science, business administration, health sciences, and natural sciences, with campus specializations—Gelsenkirchen focusing on engineering and energy systems, Bocholt on bioengineering and mechatronics, and Recklinghausen on molecular biology and business law. Located in the post-industrial Ruhr area undergoing economic transformation from coal and steel to services and technology, all three cities offer affordable living costs around €600-800 monthly but varying urban experiences—Gelsenkirchen struggling with post-industrial decline, smaller Bocholt near the Dutch border providing quiet study conditions, and Recklinghausen maintaining more traditional German town character. Programs operate primarily in German requiring B2-C1 proficiency for bachelor's degrees, with limited English-taught master's options, while the typical Hochschule structure includes mandatory 20-week internships with regional companies transitioning from traditional manufacturing to renewable energy, logistics, and digital services.
