What is the difference between a Job Seeker Visa and an Opportunity Card in Germany?

Prior to June 2024, the Job Seeker Visa classification included two distinct categories: international graduates of German universities and non-graduates from abroad. While both groups could pursue employment opportunities in Germany, non-graduates were entitled to a 6-month visa, compared to the 18-month period granted to German graduates.

The introduction of the Opportunity Card in June 2024 replaced the Job Seeker Visa specifically for non-graduates, as confirmed by various German diplomatic missions, including the German Embassy in Accra and the German Consulate in Mumbai. While the basic purpose remains the same - to enable foreign nationals to pursue employment opportunities in Germany - the conditions for non-graduate job seekers have been improved.

Can I work with the Opportunity Card?

The Chancenkarte confers specific employment rights within Germany. Holders are authorized to engage in part-time employment for up to 20 hours per week. Additionally, the visa permits participation in trial employment opportunities, allowing individuals to gain exposure to the German job market. Trial employment periods must not exceed two weeks with any single employer.

How much does the German Opportunity Card cost?

The German Chancenkarte visa application fee is €75. Payment must be made in local currency at the exchange rate prevailing at the time of application. Accepted payment methods vary from mission to mission: some German embassies and consulates require payment in cash, others accept credit cards, and some only require bankers drafts. The application fee is non-refundable and will not be refunded if your application is unsuccessful.

How long is the Chancenkarte valid?

The German Opportunity Card visa maintains validity for a maximum of 12 months. Upon securing suitable employment within this period, holders may transition from the Chancenkarte to the appropriate German work residence permit. Should the job search prove unsuccessful, the Opportunity Card typically cannot be extended beyond its initial validity period.

The application for renewal must be made through the local foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde) in Germany.

How long does it take to get a Chancenkarte?

The processing time for the German Opportunity Card can be around 2-12 weeks! As you can imagine, there is no universal processing time that applies to all cases. The exact processing time will depend on the German Embassy/Consulate or Foreigners' Registration Office that is responsible for your application.

For example, according to the official information provided by some German missions abroad, the processing time for Chancenkarte for Armenian and Chinese applicants might take just 2 weeks, for Mexicans - 4 weeks, for Argentines - 6 weeks, for Kenyans - 2 months, while for Qataris the procedure might take even 3 months.

It is therefore extremely important to check the processing times with the relevant German embassy, consulate and/or immigration authorities.

Germany Opportunity Card Requirements

There are two ways to qualify for the Chance Card:

Direct route: you earned a foreign academic or non-academic qualification, which is fully recognized in Germany, or you got the academic or non-academic qualification in Germany.
Points route: you earned a foreign university degree or completed professional training, which is recognized by the country in which you completed them. Besides, you have proof of English or German knowledge and have collected at least 6 points in the Chancenkarte points system.

Therefore, there will be different requirements or eligibility criteria for obtaining the German Opportunity Card depending on which route suits you best.

If you did not obtain your qualification in Germany, or if your qualification obtained abroad is not fully recognised in Germany - i.e. you are not recognised as a skilled worker - you will have to go through the points system to obtain the Opportunity Card.

In order to access the Chancenkarte via the points route, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, you need to collect at least 6 points from the following criteria:

How to apply for the German Chancenkarte?

The processing of Chancenkarte applications is determined by the applicant's nationality and current country of residence. Furthermore, these factors may influence specific procedural requirements for the visa application process.

For example, if you are from and live in Uzbekistan, you can apply for the Opportunity Card online, and the German Embassy in Tashkent will be responsible for you. But if you are from Uzbekistan and reside, for instance, in Bremen (Germany), then you will apply through the Immigration Office in Bremen. Besides, if you are from and live in Azerbaijan, you will have to apply for this visa in person (as the online application is currently not possible) at the German Embassy in Baku.

Certain German missions abroad collaborate with service providers - like VFS or TLSContact - to review applications. Hence, make sure to double-check with the responsible German embassy/consulate about the exact visa application procedure that applies to your case.
Citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom do NOT require a visa to enter Germany and do not have to go through the visa application process before moving to Germany. Instead, jobseekers from these countries must register their address with the Resident Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt) and apply for the Opportunity Card at the local Aliens Department (Ausländerbehörde) within 90 days of their arrival in Germany. Remember that if you are from Andorra, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, Monaco or San Marino, you can also enter Germany without a visa and apply for a residence permit at a later date if you are not taking up employment.
