Freiburg im Breisgau: State Exam programs with Admission Restriction — Numerus Clausus/NC (2026/27)

Freiburg im Breisgau offers international students an exceptional educational experience at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, one of Germany's oldest and most respected universities, with particular strengths in environmental sciences, renewable energy research, medicine, and humanities. This picturesque city at the edge of the Black Forest provides world-class education in Germany's sunniest region, where sustainability is not just studied but lived—pioneering green initiatives, car-free neighbourhoods like Vauban, and a cycling culture that puts most cities to shame have earned Freiburg its reputation as Germany's environmental capital. The city's size feels just right: large enough for a vibrant cultural scene, diverse restaurants, and lively nightlife, yet compact enough to navigate by bicycle through charming medieval streets and along the distinctive "Bächle," narrow water channels that have wound through the old town for centuries. With nearly one in five residents a student, the atmosphere is youthful and welcoming, making it easy for international newcomers to find their community while immersing themselves in relaxed southern German culture.
