Study Family Studies in Hamburg (2026/27)

Germany’s Family Studies programs offer international students a unique opportunity to understand and support families in the midst of social transformation, in a country where structures range from multi-generational households to patchwork and same-sex families, all within the framework of Europe’s most comprehensive family support system. These interdisciplinary, English-taught degrees examine families through diverse perspectives, exploring topics such as the effects of Germany’s parental leave policies on child development, intergenerational trauma among refugee families, demographic challenges linked to elder care, and the impact of digitalization on family communication. Germany’s social and cultural diversity provides a rich learning environment, from contrasts between Bavaria’s traditional values and Berlin’s diverse family forms, to Turkish-German families navigating bicultural identities, and persistent East–West differences in gender roles. The curricula balance theory with practice, offering training in counseling techniques for multicultural families, program evaluation, legal frameworks, and prevention programs addressing issues from domestic violence to gaming addiction.
