Five Reasons to choose this Master's Program

Course Description
From cosmos to benthos: explore Earth as a complete system in this four-semester, research-driven Master's taught entirely in English. You'll confront the great environmental and societal challenges of today and tomorrow, working with large, heterogeneous datasets and mastering the latest analytical methods to break complex relationships into clear systems. Choose from four distinctive majors, design your own research project, and study in a stimulating, diverse, and truly international community in Goettingen. Graduates emerge prepared for responsible roles across academia, industry, and public service, and ideally positioned for doctoral study.

This program suits graduates holding a Bachelor's in Earth Sciences, or a related degree with at least 50 credits in geoscientific modules such as geology, mineralogy, or geochemistry. Ideal applicants combine solid scientific fundamentals with strong English skills, analytical curiosity, and a genuine passion for research-driven problem solving and responsible scientific work.
Special Program Features
Major option 1 — Geobiology: dive into life and Earth's history
Trace life from its cosmic origins through to today's biogeochemical cycles, studying how organisms and Earth's climate have shaped one another across the planet's deep history.
Major option 2 — Geochemistry: read the chemistry of our planet
Use cutting-edge analytical methods to investigate the origins of the solar system, the formation of Earth and Moon, and the chemistry linking bio-, geo-, hydro- and atmosphere.
Major option 3 — Geology: decode the Earth's crust in the field
Decode the structure and history of the Earth's crust, its deposits and energy resources, through hands-on field work and the study of spatial and temporal crustal development.
Major option 4 — Geomaterials: explore matter under extremes
Probe minerals, melts, and technical materials with electron microscopy and extreme pressure-temperature experiments that reveal the deep planet and matter's smallest structures.
