The Hochschule für bildende Künste Essen (HBK Essen), also known as the Academy of Fine Arts Essen, is a public art academy founded in 1911 that combines a long tradition in fine arts with modern approaches to design and media. With around 500 students, it offers an intimate learning environment on a campus that blends historic and modern architecture in the cultural hub of Essen, in Germany’s Ruhr region. The academy provides Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in areas such as Fine Art, Photography, Media Art, Sculpture and Digital Media Design, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary practice and the intersections between artistic disciplines. HBK Essen is particularly recognised for its close ties to industry, enabling students to gain practical experience through real-world projects with local and international partners.
