Academy of Media Arts Cologne: List of all tuition-free study programs (2026/27)

Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (KHM/Academy of Media Arts Cologne), founded in 1990, is a public art academy with approximately 400 students specializing in media arts, offering a unique interdisciplinary program combining film, art, design, and technology without traditional department divisions. This specialized institution in Cologne operates on a project-based curriculum where students design their own study paths across media forms including experimental film, digital art, sound art, games, and hybrid media, with admission through highly competitive portfolio reviews accepting roughly 10% of applicants annually. Located in Cologne-Ehrenfeld, the academy provides 24/7 access to professional studios, editing suites, sound labs, and equipment typically unavailable at general universities, though the open curriculum requiring self-direction may prove challenging for students expecting structured programs. With one-third international enrollment, KHM operates bilingually with courses in German and English, though B2 German proficiency aids integration, while the small size enables close mentorship from practicing artists and filmmakers but limits course variety compared to larger institutions.
