Braunschweig University of Fine Arts: List of all tuition-free study programs (2026/27)

Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig (HBK Braunschweig), founded in 1963 with roots dating to 1842, is a public art academy with approximately 1,000 students studying fine arts, design, media studies, art education, and performing arts in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony. This relatively young art academy operates on an interdisciplinary model allowing students to combine different artistic disciplines without rigid departmental boundaries, with admission through competitive portfolio reviews and aptitude tests typically accepting 10-15% of applicants depending on the program. Located in Braunschweig (250,000 residents), approximately 65 kilometers from Hannover, the academy occupies purpose-built facilities including the 1984 main building and studios constructed from repurposed EXPO 2000 pavilion elements, providing workshop spaces for traditional and digital media though the industrial city lacks the vibrant art scenes of Berlin or Hamburg. Programs operate primarily in German requiring B2-C1 proficiency for most degrees, particularly art education which leads to teaching positions in German schools, while the open curriculum structure demands self-direction as students design their own study paths across disciplines without prescribed course sequences.
