Overview Deadlines

The Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin – also known as Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin or HfM Berlin – is one of Germany’s leading public music conservatories. Founded in 1950 and located in the vibrant heart of Berlin, the school offers top-tier academic and artistic training in Western classical music and performing arts. As of 2023, it serves around 500 students from across the globe.

HfM Berlin is situated in the historic Mitte district, with two central campuses: the main building on Charlottenstraße 55, directly behind the Konzerthaus Berlin, and the Neuer Marstall near Museum Island. These campuses provide state-of-the-art facilities, including professional-grade practice rooms, recording studios, rehearsal spaces, and an extensive music library – creating the ideal environment for aspiring musicians and performers.

Particularly noteworthy is its pioneering opera and musical theatre directing program, one of the first in Europe, launched in 1955.

For degree courses with a numerus clausus, part of the study places are allocated according to the grade point average (GPA) of the previous degree. Selection is generally based on how many applicants apply for a place. The higher the grade, the more difficult it is to get onto the course. The German grading system ranges from 1.0 (very good) to 6.0 (unsatisfactory).
