About the University
The Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, located in Potsdam-Babelsberg, Germany, is the oldest and largest film school in the country. Founded in 1954 as the Deutsche Hochschule für Filmkunst (German Academy for Film Art), it was renamed in 1985 after the influential German-Jewish filmmaker Konrad Wolf. With approximately 800 students as of 2021, the university offers a comprehensive education in all aspects of filmmaking and media production.
Located on the site of the historic Babelsberg film studios, Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf offers students a unique learning environment steeped in cinematic history. The campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities including film and television studios, post-production suites, animation labs and an extensive media library.
The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in film and television production, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, sound design, production design and film music composition. It also offers specialised courses in animation, documentary filmmaking and digital media production. The curriculum emphasises hands-on experience and practical skills, with students working on numerous film projects throughout their studies.
One of the university's strengths is its international outlook and collaborations. It has partnerships with over 60 film schools worldwide and is an active participant in the Erasmus+ programme, facilitating student and faculty exchanges. The university also hosts the annual Sehsüchte International Student Film Festival, which showcases the work of emerging filmmakers from around the world.
Notable alumni of Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf include Wolfgang Kohlhaase, a renowned screenwriter who collaborated with Konrad Wolf on several films; Andreas Dresen, a prominent German filmmaker known for his social-realist dramas; and Karim Aïnouz, a Brazilian filmmaker who has won numerous international awards.
