About the University

The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) is a public university founded in 1992, although its origins date back to 1830 when it was founded as a forestry college. With more than 2,000 students, it is a small institution located in the city of Eberswalde, Brandenburg, Germany. The university is located in an urban setting surrounded by extensive natural countryside, providing an ideal environment for its focus on sustainable development. The campus is close to Berlin, offering students access to the amenities of a large city while enjoying the advantages of a smaller town.

HNEE is known for its innovative and unique study programmes in four faculties: Nature Conservation, Forestry, Organic Agriculture, Climate Change Adaptation, Sustainable Business, Timber Construction and Sustainable Tourism Management. The University's curriculum is deeply rooted in the principles of sustainable development and prepares students to become leaders and experts in these crucial fields.

The university is recognised for its commitment to sustainability, having been EMAS certified since 2010 and carbon neutral since 2014. It has around 120 collaborations with universities, companies and institutions worldwide, fostering international collaboration and research opportunities for its students and faculty. One of the unique aspects of HNEE is its graduate programme offered in collaboration with the Biosphere Reserves Institute, which promotes applied research on biodiversity-friendly land use with a focus on biosphere reserves. This programme aims to train and promote PhD students from Germany and abroad for academic and professional careers in a broader scientific-theoretical context. Overall, Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development stands out for its unwavering commitment to sustainable development, its specialised and innovative study programmes, and its commitment to promoting international cooperation and research in crucial areas of environmental and social sustainability.
