About the University
The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), also known as Viadrina, is a public university located in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany, on the border with Poland. Founded in 1506, the university was closed in 1811 and re-established in 1991 after German reunification. In recent times, Viadrina has become a highly international institution with around 6,500 students from more than 100 different countries. Located in the heart of Europe, Viadrina's campus is uniquely positioned to foster cross-border cooperation and intercultural exchange. The university's facilities are spread throughout the city of Frankfurt (Oder), with the Collegium Polonicum, a joint study and research centre with Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland, located just across the border in Słubice.
Viadrina offers a wide range of academic programmes in its three faculties: Law, Business and Economics, and Social and Cultural Sciences. The university is particularly known for its interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research, with a strong focus on European and international studies. Viadrina also offers several double and joint degree programmes in cooperation with partner universities abroad. Viadrina is consistently ranked among the top 500 universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The university is particularly renowned for its programmes in law, economics and social sciences. Notable Viadrina alumni include the philosophers Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten and Johann Gottlieb Gleditsch, the naturalists Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt, and the poet Heinrich von Kleist.
The university's former president, Professor Gesine Schwan, ran for president of Germany in 2004 and 2009. What sets Viadrina apart is its commitment to promoting European integration and international understanding. With around 40% of its students coming from abroad, particularly from Poland, the university offers a truly multicultural learning environment. Its location on the German-Polish border and its close cooperation with Polish institutions make Viadrina a unique bridge between Western and Eastern Europe, preparing its students for the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly interconnected world.
