The Institut für Diakoniewissenschaft und DiakonieManagement (IDWM) is a specialised institute for the academic study of diaconia, meaning the social and charitable work of Christian churches and their organisations. It was originally part of the Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal/Bethel and has belonged to the public Bielefeld University since 2022, where it sits within the Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology. Its roots go back to 2004, when a master's programme in Diaconic Management was launched for leaders in diaconal organisations. The institute itself emerged from that programme in 2008, together with a doctoral programme in Diaconal Studies.

Selection is generally based on how many applicants apply for a place. The higher the grade, the more difficult it is to get onto the course.
