Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences: List of all tuition-free international programs (2026/27)

Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, founded in 1991, is a public Hochschule with approximately 5,500 students split between campuses in Magdeburg (235,000 residents), Saxony-Anhalt's capital, and Stendal (40,000 residents), a small town 55 kilometers north. This regional university offers bachelor's and master's programs in engineering, business administration, social sciences, media design, health sciences, and distinctive specializations including Childhood Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, and Safety and Hazard Prevention rarely found at other German universities. The dual-campus structure divides programs—Magdeburg hosts engineering, water management, and design near the historic cathedral and Elbe River, while Stendal focuses on social sciences and applied human sciences in a quiet small-town setting with extremely low living costs around €450-600 monthly. Programs operate primarily in German requiring B2-C1 proficiency for most degrees, though the English-taught Master in Sustainable Resources, Engineering and Management (StREaM) and Water Engineering double degree with Universidad de La Coruña attract international students to this otherwise regional institution.

Located in eastern Germany with the economic challenges typical of the region, both cities offer affordable living but limited job markets beyond public sector and regional companies, with many graduates relocating to Berlin (150km from Magdeburg) or western Germany for broader career opportunities. The green Magdeburg campus provides modern facilities in a city rebuilding from war destruction and GDR-era architecture, while tiny Stendal offers pastoral tranquility but minimal student life or cultural activities, requiring careful consideration of which location suits individual preferences. Magdeburg-Stendal suits cost-conscious students interested in unique specializations like sign language interpreting or safety engineering, or those comfortable with eastern German settings, rather than those seeking metropolitan experiences, diverse job markets, or the prestige associated with larger technical universities.
