Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences: List of all tuition-free study programs (2026/27)

Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences (HRW), established in 2009, is one of Germany's newest public universities with approximately 6,000 students split between campuses in Mülheim an der Ruhr (170,000 residents) and Bottrop (117,000 residents) in the post-industrial Ruhr region. This young Fachhochschule offers bachelor's and master's programs in computer science, engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, energy systems), business administration, and industrial engineering, designed to address regional economic transformation from coal and steel to technology and services. Located in the Ruhr area between Duisburg and Essen, approximately 30 minutes from Düsseldorf, both campus cities offer lower living costs around €650-850 monthly compared to Rhine metropolises, though the post-industrial urban landscape and ongoing economic transition may require adjustment for students expecting traditional German university towns. As a new institution still building its reputation, HRW provides modern facilities including recently constructed campus buildings with up-to-date laboratories and equipment, though lacking the established alumni networks, research traditions, and employer recognition of older universities.
