It has been recognised as one of eleven "Universities of Excellence" in Germany since 2012. The university consistently excels in research and innovation, and is the only university in eastern Germany to have been approved for a graduate school and research centre funded by the German Research Foundation. The university also boasts numerous clusters of excellence, including PoL (Physics of Life), ct.qmat (Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter), and CeTI (Center for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop).
Its international reputation is reflected in its diverse student body, with approximately one-seventh of its students coming from abroad, primarily from Europe and Asia.
